Preparing for decor
In order for the painted table to serve for a long time, it is important to approach the work process correctly.
Work begins with an inspection of the table. It is tested for strength, the condition of all elements is studied. If necessary, they can be replaced. Fix the dried parts.
Inspect the fasteners and replace them with new ones if necessary. Photos of finished works can be seen here.
Any cracks found must be filled with acrylic wood putty.
Clean the surfaces of all parts from old paint and dirt, sand with a machine or sandpaper.
Gluing technology
One of the main advantages of this method is the ability to work independently without spending money on hiring a specialist. Self-adhesive film for the table must be resistant to possible mechanical damage.
At the initial stage, it is important to properly treat the surface:
A surface that is too porous may require more coats of primer. If you are not sure about the quality of the self-adhesive, it is recommended to pre-treat the table with glue until the film is applied. It will lie as flat as possible on a varnished wooden table.
The application technology includes cutting sheets. Be sure to leave a small reserve. If necessary, match the drawings. Using a sharp knife, remove excess after maximum fixation. There are special markings on the back that make cutting easier.
The following steps are performed:
If the preparation and fixation were carried out correctly, then the self-adhesive tape will independently position itself evenly on the gluing area. If the film bulges and cannot be smoothed out, carefully puncture the bubble. After the air escapes, the material will stick tightly, the puncture will remain invisible.

The most important thing is to come up with a theme for your table. Think about what you would like to depict on it? It can be anything you want. If you have the makings of an artist, you can start drawing right away, with or without a sketch.

But if you’re into art, don’t despair! Stencils will come to the rescue. You can purchase a stencil at an office supply store or make it yourself.
To do this, it is enough to cut out a picture from a magazine and use it as a kind of pattern, according to which this picture will be transferred to your furniture.
Or trace any of the objects you like with a pencil on a sheet of paper, cut it out and, placing it on the table, paint over the space of the cut out stencil with paint. By removing the stencil, you will see the design on the table.
If you find this method difficult to implement, you can seek help from a professional artist, for whom performing this type of work will not be difficult.
True, the artist’s services will need to be paid for and this method can no longer be called budgetary.
As for the paint that should be used, it must be moisture resistant. Acrylic paint is considered the best option. It is odorless and dries very quickly.

Operating procedure.
The first step is to clean the surfaces from remnants of old coating, corrosion and dirt. The elements are polished and cleaned of dust.
It is recommended to treat the table surface with an antiseptic composition. This will prevent the formation of fungus or rust.
After drying the table, you can start decorating. If postcards or illustrations from magazines are used for decoration, they should be soaked in warm water for 15 minutes. After this, carefully remove the top layer with the image. Napkins for decoupage do not need this.
The surface intended for decoration is covered with a layer of glue. The image is applied and carefully smoothed, expelling air bubbles and excess adhesive mass.
After the glue has dried, the table is covered with colorless varnish. The varnish is applied in several stages, each layer is dried.
You can use any illustrations, special napkins and even newspapers as decorative elements for decoupage.
Table decor methods
It doesn’t matter in what way or method you breathe new life into an old piece of furniture, but you must adhere to two important points of instructions on how to properly decorate a table. Otherwise, the quality of your work may suffer
- We determine the material from which the table is made. It can be wood or metal.
- Remove the previous coating from the surface to be decorated.
If your table is made of metal, or contains such elements, remove old paint from the surface using special solutions. Also, if there is rust on the surface, it also needs to be removed. At home, rust can be removed with cola or vinegar; the latter can always be found in the housewife’s kitchen.
- We clean the wooden surface with sandpaper and remove dust.
- If there are cracks on the item, and you do not need them for decoration, then they must be removed using putty.
- Next, soak it well with an antiseptic and apply a primer coat. Let it dry.
There are a huge number of ideas and design methods for beginning designers and just hobbyists; only your imagination can limit them. After preparing the surface, you can proceed to the next steps
Craquelure
Craquelure is perfect for restoring antique or stylized pieces of furniture. This is a special varnish coating that creates the impression of a cracked surface.
Craquelure, depending on the composition and application technique, can be single-phase, it is applied in one layer. During the drying process, cracks appear on the surface.
A two-phase coating consists of two components, water-based and epoxy-based. The textured surface appears as a result of the interaction of these two compositions.
The color of the resulting veins depends on the underlying layer and grout. This method is used to complement the decor using the decoupage technique.
Tile
If there are ceramic tiles left in the room after renovation work, they can be used to decorate the table.
The rules for decorating a table in this case differ little from other tile laying work. The tiles are laid on the surface of the countertop in accordance with the intended pattern.
A table decorated in this way will serve perfectly in the kitchen, veranda or country house.
Dining table decor with textiles
In the modern world, a tablecloth is not usually used every day. She is more concerned with ceremonial details. Although, for certain style trends, the tablecloth is harmonious even when decorated for every day. This primarily applies to styles - Provence and country.
The most popular in this regard are table runners. They allow you to add the desired shade, ornament, and texture to the dining area. In addition, the track acts as a protector, protecting the tabletop from scratches and chips.
With similar intentions, napkins-backings for serving items are also used. They do not cover the entire surface of the countertop, but at the same time protect it well. It is better to place these products on the table before lunch or use them on an ongoing basis. In this case, they must not be very large.
Mosaic
Decorating ideas and methods for beginners include a variety of simple decorating methods. Mosaic is one such option.
By being creative, you can use broken ceramic tiles, wood cuts, old coins, glass or acrylic pieces as decorative mosaic elements.
A master class on decorating a table with your own hands using mosaics will help you get the job done. Ceramic tiles were used as an example of mosaic design.
To work you need to prepare:
- table,
- remnants of tiles,
- hammer,
- nail,
- glue,
- grout for seams.
Operating procedure.
Select and complete a life-size drawing for decoration. After placing it on the tabletop, duplicate the contours with a hammer and nail. After removing the drawing, draw the outlines with a pencil.
It is more convenient to cut the remaining tiles intended for work using a tile cutter.
The elements of the mosaic panel are fixed to the table surface using glue.
After completing the mosaic design, the seams are carefully grouted with a special grout for seams.
In a similar way, you can apply other elements to create a unique decor.
Table decor with ceramic tiles: maximum practicality
To update the table with tiles, it is better to use decorative panels, ceramic tiles in the majolica style or imitating natural textures: wood, stone. Consumable materials include tile adhesive or liquid nails, grout, spacer crosses, sponge, spatulas.
Table with ceramic top in Moroccan style
The tiles are glued to the surface of the table, gradually applying a thin layer of glue to its surface using a spatula. Adjacent tiles are separated by “crosses”. The tiles should be pressed firmly against the countertop, wiping off excess rising adhesive if necessary. The fixed tile is left to dry for a day, and the dividing crosses are removed. Then, according to the instructions, prepare the grout and fill the seams with it using a rubber spatula. Excess composition is removed with a damp sponge.
Bright ceramics as tabletop decor
As a rule, only the countertop is decorated with ceramic tiles, and the remaining parts are updated in other ways, for example, by painting. The same principle applies to other labor-intensive furniture renovation techniques. The combination of several decoration methods opens up the widest possible possibilities for creativity.
Self-adhesive
Adhesive-based film is well suited for table decoration. It's easy to work with.
The material is carefully glued onto the prepared surfaces, smoothing it thoroughly.
Decorative tape
An original interior element can be obtained by covering the surface of the table with multi-colored tape.
The advantage of this option is its ease of operation. If necessary, the sticky strips can be quickly removed and the remaining adhesive can be washed off with a solvent.
Epoxy resin
The peculiarity of epoxy resin that quickly hardens in the open air, turning into plastic, can be safely used when decorating a table.
The coating is transparent, so you can use pebbles, leaves, flowers, shells and other objects as additional decoration.
Epoxy resin
Perhaps the most impressive table decor will be pouring epoxy resin. This design is perfect for a dining table.
- Using its composition, you can fill all the cracks in the wood and give the effect of transparent plastic.
- You can make recesses in the tabletop yourself, or you can put whatever you want into those that exist naturally, there is enough imagination for that.
- More shine can be added to this coating using luminescent powder.
