DIY gazebo made from scrap materials: photos of different ideas

Every owner of a private house wants to equip his yard as comfortably as possible. And a universal architectural object in the form of a cozy gazebo is considered an integral attribute of proper organization. With your own hands, using available materials, you can build a wonderful indoor recreation area, where you can enjoy spending time with friends on a warm summer evening.

Choosing a suitable place for a gazebo with your own hands

It is important to choose a good location for future construction. A gazebo, made with your own hands from scrap materials, should be near the house, preferably in the shade of trees. Indeed, despite the fact that this building has a roof, in the heat it can get very hot, so it will not be very comfortable to be in it.

DIY installation

In order to make a gazebo with your own hands at the dacha, you need to follow the order of the stages of work. This will allow you to avoid making mistakes during installation and get the expected result in the end.

Frame and floor

You need to start with the frame and floor. If the structure is wooden, then beams for the base will also be suitable. The floor will also be made of wooden planks. It is better to make the basis for the beams and floor from concrete. It is enough to fill the screed with a thickness of several centimeters. It will be the best and most reliable option, and will last a long time. Before work, you need to carefully choose the location for installation, think several times before making a decision. The site also needs to be cleared and leveled for pouring the foundation. In such a structure it is not recommended to combine metal and wooden parts.

As practice shows, even if you protect a wooden base with roofing felt or bitumen, when the wood comes into contact with concrete, it will begin to rot over time. The result is the subsequent destruction of the structure. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid this initially.

To complete this task you should:

  • concrete the profile pipe (it should be 30 centimeters higher than the concrete);
  • drill holes for screws in the pipe;
  • push wooden posts into the pipe;
  • We fix the post in the pipe with screws.

If the owner plans to install a small light gazebo, then installing a brick fence for the enclosure is not necessary. You can get by with a fence made of eurolining 90 cm high. This is quite enough. The lining is secured to the longitudinal bars. This design will help hide from the sun and wind. The fences for its walls are attached to the supports with screws.

As an alternative to lining, you can use polycarbonate. It is also easy to install and is resistant to high temperatures and wet weather. For the roof frame it is better to use 50x50 centimeter timber. From such timber it is necessary to create a base on which the sheathing will be installed, and then the roofing material. Slate, metal tiles and ondulin can be used as a roof.

Roof installation

When designing a roof, you need to calculate it in such a way that at the end of the roof there is no need to cut off the last sheet. To do this, measure the height of the roof and subtract the overlap of the sheets over each other. Making a gazebo at home is easy. It is enough to choose high-quality material.

For example, for slate, each sheet of which has 8 waves, the length of the gazebo will be a multiple of 1 meter, and the length of the slopes will be 1.75 m

When considering coating options, special attention should be paid to polycarbonate

It has the following advantages:

  • An excellent option for lightweight gazebos, as it weighs little but is a very durable material.
  • Fences are made from polycarbonate.
  • It is a translucent plastic of low weight.
  • A metal profile is often used together with it.

Polycarbonate is a material with good elasticity. It can be easily bent. Because of this property, it is often used when installing an arched roof. To create one, you need to weld strips of steel 50 mm wide. First, they need to be installed on the support strips, and then holes must be drilled to secure the sheets.

Gazebos are also sometimes covered with metal tiles. OSB sheets are installed under it. They do an excellent job of holding the tiles on the roof. Basically, such sheets have a thickness of 10-12 millimeters. This material has fairly good strength and rigidity.

What type of gazebo to choose?

The main place for family meetings on cozy evenings in the garden is the gazebo. There are the following types that you can easily build yourself:

  1. Open. This is a system of posts around the entire perimeter that supports a lightweight roof. Most often, the frame is made of metal rods or wood.
  2. Closed. Small houses with windows and doors that allow you to use small garden architecture all year round in any weather.

In a closed gazebo you can organize a full-fledged summer kitchen. Choose a design depending on the size of the site. A closed structure is more suitable for large areas because it looks quite massive. Open - ideal for any size yard. Thanks to its lightness and airiness, it does not clutter up the space. Semi-open pergolas with several walls and a roof are popular. A frame decorated with climbing plants will create shade and coolness inside. Choose a variety of climbing roses, lush flowers that provide color throughout the summer.

Decoration of the gazebo

When the frame of the structure is ready, all that remains is to finish the walls and roof. Sheets of cellular or regular polycarbonate are suitable for this purpose. The material bends easily, which allows you to make the roof dome-shaped, and is fixed to the frame with self-tapping screws. Ondulin, tiles or tarpaulin are also used for the roof.

The last stage is finishing the walls. To do this, use polycarbonate, wood, plywood sheets, tree branches, film, fabric - whatever comes to hand. The main thing is that it turns out beautifully. When the walls are ready, furniture and interior elements are installed inside the gazebo. If desired, they can set up a summer kitchen, observing fire safety rules.

The simplest gazebos

Before you start building a gazebo with your own hands from scrap materials, you must decide what type of covered recreation area you choose for yourself. There are two such options:

  • temporary;
  • permanent.

Fabric models or canopies are widely used as temporary gazebos. There is no point in doing this option yourself, since there are many similar products of all shapes and sizes on sale at an attractive price. The advantage of such gazebos is that during the cold season they can be easily folded and stored in a safe place. But a permanent gazebo, which you decide to build from durable materials at hand, can last for a long time, that is, for years.

Gazebo drawings

The first step with which you need to begin preparing for the construction of a gazebo is the drawings of the gazebo. In addition, sketches must be attached to the drawings. It would be nice to have a complete package of documents for construction and a 3D model.

A set of these documents contains an indication of the dimensions of each design detail.

The drawings in the diagram of the finished gazebo in several projections give a complete picture of the appearance of the gazebo.

This, in general, is the main thing that the buyer of drawings pays attention to. If the appearance of the gazebo matches the general style of the site, then it is worth going into the details of the construction project.

Long-lasting do-it-yourself gazebos made from scrap materials

After you decide on the location of future construction, you need to decide what material you want to build the gazebo from. Most often used for these purposes:

  • brick;
  • tree;
  • metal.

Wood

Wooden pavilions have earned the greatest popularity among city residents. You can use existing material to build them. However, if you first make some products from logs, timber, boards or even pallets with your own hands, you will understand that the wood must be sanded and processed before starting work, otherwise over time it will lose its pleasant appearance and darken.

Stone or brick

If you decide to build a gazebo made of stone or brick, it is better to create a structure with a spacious area. Such buildings look monumental and will look great next to a classic house. A do-it-yourself garden gazebo made from scrap materials, made from untreated natural stone, will be valued much more expensive.

Metal gazebos

A very good and noble appearance of the gazebo can be achieved from metal. It is fire-resistant, durable, does not corrode or rot, and can be adapted to any architectural style of the site. Aluminum profiles are a budget option that can be turned into a gazebo yourself.

Available materials

In order to build a beautiful and original gazebo on your summer cottage, it is not necessary to spend large sums. All you need is a little imagination. You probably have leftover building materials lying around, such as boards, metal profiles, plastic, and so on. If not, you can always use other materials that everyone has on hand.

Tree

Wood is the easiest to work with. In a few days you can build a good wooden structure. The main advantages of a wooden gazebo are its convenience, environmental friendliness and ideal fit into the natural environment. Disadvantages include its susceptibility to combustion and the fact that natural factors such as moisture and sunlight do not affect the material very well. Plus, insects such as termites can settle in and destroy it. Therefore, it requires special treatments.

Solid wooden gazebo

Wooden structures are either permanent or collapsible. The first is placed in one place and stands there until the end of time, the second can be folded and taken away, for example, for the winter period.

Collapsible version of the gazebo

It will be interesting to look at a structure made from unprocessed trunks connected with branches. Such a gazebo will look like in fairy tales.

Brick

This is a good solution for building a gazebo. A brick gazebo can be suitable for overnight stays. To do this, double-glazed windows are installed in it, additionally insulated, complemented with appropriate furniture, and you can sleep there. In addition, you can build a summer kitchen in it by building a stove.

Brick building

So, a brick gazebo is durable, fireproof and practical, it does not require special care. But at the same time, brick structures are quite heavy, so they need a good strip foundation. Plus, its construction takes much more time and effort.

Metal

Another great option for building a gazebo in the country is metal. To build it, you definitely need a grinder and a hammer drill. If you have them and have all the building materials, then you can build such a structure quite quickly. The base for such a gazebo can be absolutely anything. The use of welding in construction is optional. You can fasten the parts with self-tapping screws.

Metal construction

The advantages of a metal structure include long-term performance, it is reliable and stable. Metal is a fireproof material. But building such a gazebo is more difficult than the options described above. In addition, the metal must be additionally protected from corrosion.

Polycarbonate

This is a good material for creating a modern, cozy and bright gazebo. The material itself is very light, so it does not require a powerful base. Any frame can be covered with polycarbonate. If you do not have this material in stock, but you are interested in building a gazebo from it, then it is inexpensive and can be purchased at any hardware store.

Metal frame with polycarbonate roof

Positive aspects of the material:

  • it's durable
  • allows light to pass through, so the structure will be well lit during the day, while some types protect from UV rays,
  • flexible, you can make a gazebo of an original shape,
  • small mass,
  • low thermal conductivity,
  • environmental friendliness,
  • the material is durable and non-flammable,
  • it is easy to handle and install.

Flaws:

  • from heat it can greatly increase in size, and from cold it can shrink,
  • if not protected from ultraviolet radiation, it may become cloudy, become less flexible and become cracked,
  • mechanical damage is its next weakness.

Original materials

Handy materials are absolutely any items that are lying around under your feet. Even plastic bottles fit this description. They are easy and quick to build with. It will not be heavy, therefore, its construction does not require a solid foundation. It can be built as a temporary structure and then easily dismantled.

Pallets have recently become a very popular building material due to their low cost. They are also called pallets. These are containers in which piece cargo is transported. The material is affordable, environmentally friendly, easy and quick to install. But its main drawback is its fragility. It lasts for about two to three years.

You can also combine different materials. From several raw material options you can get a very attractive relaxation and comfort area.

Gazebo shape

The formation of the future structure depends on preferences: the gazebo can be rectangular, round or hexagonal. The roof can also be of any shape. You can also decorate the roof with thatch or reeds. Plant climbing perennials at the base of the pergola to create a natural roof.

After the gazebo has been built with your own hands from scrap materials, you can begin to design the area near the structure. An environment of lush and climbing flowers will give a beautiful look. Properly selected garden furniture, plastic or wicker, which will become the main element of the gazebo’s decor. Determine your preferences: do you want a minimalist design with a manicured lawn or an abundance of flower beds, arches and shrubs that bloom in the warmer months. Flowers need special care; caring for them always requires some labor. Before planting flowers, dig up the designated areas and remove weeds. If possible, the flower bed is filled with a drainage layer of sand 10-15 centimeters high, and soil with fertilizers is placed on top.

Stages of building a wooden gazebo with your own hands

To build a good-quality wooden gazebo on your site, you need to go through several stages: first, they design the future structure, then prepare the territory, pour the foundation, erect the frame and add a roof to everything. The last stage will be decorating the building.

Designing a gazebo

To develop a gazebo project, you need to walk around your territory and decide on several factors:

  • location. It is important whether the building will be located close to the house, close to it or at a distance;
  • product shape and dimensions. The calculation of materials and selection of tools depends on this;
  • roof shape;
  • internal content: presence or absence of barbecue, furniture, stairs.

And here you can learn how to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands

All calculations are carried out with recordings on paper. The shape can be drawn first as a sketch, and then drawn more carefully, indicating all dimensions to scale.

Preparing the area

The territory is prepared properly: a flower bed, abandoned working tools, uneven landscape, or overgrowth may interfere with the work process.

Plants with long roots are torn out entirely, otherwise this may later damage the foundation. The use of herbicides is not prohibited.

Pouring the foundation for the gazebo

A foundation should be built under the wooden gazebo, which will improve the strength of the structure. First, a hole is dug for a strip or monolithic foundation.

The tape version is made under the frame and walls. The perimeter of the future building is measured and a trench 45-55 cm wide is dug along it. Formwork is made along it, metal rods welded together are inserted inside to reinforce the structure.

You can pour concrete from sand, cement, gravel and water. Water is taken at the rate of 50% of the total amount of cement.

A monolithic foundation is needed for massive large buildings. You will need to dig a hole under the entire area of the future gazebo, and formwork only around the perimeter. You also need a structure made of metal rods and concrete.

Frame construction process

Once the foundation is completely ready, you can begin to build the frame. If you take logs or beams, you will get a very durable and beautiful structure. There are as many logs used as there are corners of the building.

The diameter of the logs can be 15 cm, and the diameter of the square beam is 10x10 cm. First, lay out the base, and the frame will be installed on it. Rafters are attached to the top and are also connected to each other.

Gazebo roof

The rafters serve as the basis for the future roof. Much depends on the roof material; the heavier it is, the stronger the top trim on the support pillars should be.

There are no particularly strict criteria for the roof of the gazebo.

Gazebo made of plants

If you want to cover your terrace so that you can also use it during extreme heat and summer rain, then you should consider building a light gazebo. Pergola is the most common wooden structure standing on stilts. Plants can be an aesthetic way to achieve shade in the garden. The top of the pergola can be covered with lightweight materials such as trapezoidal or corrugated panels made of polyester, PVC and wood. For supporters of nature and natural regulation of daylight in the gazebo, a pergola with a cover is recommended. Dense foliage can stop light rain in the summer, provide desired shade and provide natural air flow. In turn, in winter it will open up the space above the terrace and allow the sun's rays, desired at this time of year, to freely penetrate there. First of all, it will be an attractive decoration for the entire estate.

Gazebos made from scrap materials can be found in many summer cottages today. Use your imagination and use the suggested options in the photo to start building a comfortable recreation area on your garden plot.

From desire to implementation

Not every person has the opportunity to start building a gazebo, since this process requires considerable financial costs: purchasing the necessary materials, certain types of tools, building solutions and much more, which can cause difficulties and problems in implementing this idea.

There are no hopeless situations or insurmountable circumstances for a person! All in our hands. It is not at all necessary to turn your wallet inside out in order to build this structure against all odds. There is an alternative option that will not harm your financial situation and will help you realize your wonderful dream.

By giving free rein to creative thinking and imagination, a person will feel a surge of creative ideas and interesting thoughts. He will think about how to make a gazebo from available material. To create it, you can use any building materials that are left after renovating a house, bathhouse or other extension.

The main thing is to approach the initial stage of the planned work seriously and carefully, think through and calculate everything with mathematical precision, concentration, in order to be fully confident in how much material will have to be spent, whether it will be enough to complete the construction, visually imagine what it should look like gazebo, where it will be located in the future.

Sometimes you want to hide from abnormal heat or inclement, cloudy weather and at the same time be in nature, breathe in the air and admire the wondrous beauties of the surrounding nature.

In this case, a person plays several roles simultaneously: architect, designer, builder.

We make the frame and cladding

Next comes the most difficult stage - creating the gazebo itself. The process will vary depending on the type of material you use.

Other stages of constructing a gazebo:

  1. The frame is a very important part. It holds all other materials on itself. It can be made of metal or wood. For a rectangular gazebo, you need to make four support posts and a roof sheathing.
  2. Now we want to tell you about roofs. It can be made of any waterproof material. If it is with a slope, then the snow will not linger on it.
  3. The cladding can be made of absolutely any material. The main thing is to follow the rules described below.
  4. The floor can be made of different materials. Usually paving slabs or wood are used.
  5. The door is an optional element. Of course, if you don’t have an expensive barbecue in it.

In fact, the construction of a gazebo does not have many subtleties and nuances. Therefore, it is not difficult to make it yourself.
