Home / Ceiling design / In the hallway / Corridor and hallway with suspended ceilings - how to organize lighting?
It is always difficult to make good and high-quality lighting in the corridor. It is necessary to distribute the light flux over the entire area and, moreover, to make the light not too harsh so that the eyes do not suffer. Perhaps the easiest way is to make good lighting in the corridor, which is decorated with a suspended or suspended ceiling. Both of these designs make it possible to install built-in lamps anywhere in the ceiling, but a tension covering will have certain advantages.
Features of the room
The hallway is the first room a person enters on the way to a house or apartment.
When creating a suspended ceiling design for a hallway, you need to pay attention to the following features of the room:
- small dimensions;
- neutrality of the style used;
- complexity of the ceiling configuration, the presence of corners and turns.
These features encourage the installation of a stretch ceiling. It is this design that will allow you to create the necessary interior in a modern style.
How to install spots in the ceiling
To install spots in a suspended ceiling, you need to be extremely careful and strictly follow the instructions.
If unsuccessful, you may damage the ceiling, which can only be corrected by replacing it! If you are still confident in your abilities and want to install the lamps yourself, then take the following steps: If you are still confident in your abilities and want to install the lamps yourself, then take the following steps:
- Before stretching the ceiling, install fasteners for the lamps. Don't forget to turn off the power to the room!
- Glue a special reinforcing ring directly under the stand. Do not allow any shifts.
- Cut out the film inside the ring using a knife.
- Now you need to bring the wiring out and, if necessary, insert heat-insulating rings that will protect the ceiling from deformation in case of overheating.
- Now we attach the cartridge and carefully insert it into the ring using the clamps.
- Screw in the light bulb and check the result!
Thus, simple actions, performed skillfully and carefully, will lead you to success.
The clamps are held on a spring mechanism, so it is recommended to make all movements smoothly, otherwise the part may fall inside the suspended ceiling.
Glossy surface
Glossy stretch ceilings in the hallway are installed in a limited space.
Polyethylene film up to 2 meters wide is used. It is important to consider some features:- it is advisable to use light colors without relief or images;
- you should choose the right lighting with the effect of scattering rays;
- It is allowed to create contrast by combining light colors with red or black.

It is necessary to achieve a reflective effect from a glossy canvas. For this purpose, high-quality materials from trusted manufacturers are used.
Matte coating
In textile design, a matte stretch ceiling is used in the hallway. This material reaches a width of up to 5 meters. It has its own differences:
- allows you to create a ceiling in a classic style;
- it reflects light well and distributes it evenly throughout the room;
- provides the opportunity to paint the surface in the desired color, or apply an appropriate design.
This coating is characterized by increased strength and durability.
Narrow room
It is advisable to make a stretch ceiling in a narrow hallway in the form of a structure with several levels. This solution will provide some advantages:
- will allow you to divide the room into different zones;
- will hide engineering communications;
- will create an original design using various lighting elements.
This design will visually change the height of the ceiling and visually expand the room. It will add the correct geometry to the room and improve the aesthetic design of the room.

Two-level stretch ceilings in the corridor
Photo of a two-level stretch ceiling in the hallway
With two-level stretch ceilings, the hallway will be radically transformed. However, it is not necessary that the room be spacious. A correctly selected design will change spatial perception and expand the boundaries of the corridor. This technology involves combining several materials. For example, drywall and PVC film. With the help of gypsum boards, niches are built for sliding wardrobes without the risk of damaging the decorative fabric.
A common way to arrange a two-level ceiling is to install a plasterboard box around the perimeter a few centimeters below the film.
The thickness and shape of the frame are chosen differently, the edges are made straight or embossed, in the form of waves, complex lines. More often, a gypsum plasterboard box serves as a kind of niche for installing spotlights or LED backlighting.
Another option for a combined ceiling consisting of two levels is to install a gypsum plasterboard box to the base base, and stretch a PVC film over the structure. This technique will be useful if you need to get an original pattern, which cannot be achieved with traditional dyeing.
Backlight
Often there is no natural light in the hallway. In this regard, illumination of suspended ceilings in the hallway is of exceptional importance.
When producing it, you must adhere to the following rules:
- it is important to use energy-saving LED lamps with a power of up to 35 W;
- when the stretch ceiling is heated to a temperature of +70°C, they deform; this is important to take into account when choosing lamps;
- It is not recommended to install chandeliers with shades pointing upward.
Spotlights installed in the ceiling are well suited. They do not heat up and allow you to create various combinations with diffused light.
The use of faceted crystal lamps will create a festive atmosphere in the room and emphasize the luxury of the apartment’s interior.
Installation technology for film decorative ceilings
Stretch ceilings are hung after preliminary preparation: the necessary utilities are laid along the standard ceiling, brackets for lamps are installed, and the frame is mounted. To attach the film along the perimeter of the walls, and in rooms with a large area - along the ceiling, longitudinal brackets with landing pockets - baguettes - are hung. Depending on the total weight of the structure, the frame is made of plastic and metal elements. The method of film attachment also varies. The material is secured using a wedge-shaped insert, or using a harpoon method.
Important! Distance from suspended to permanent ceiling
PVC film is installed using a heat gun. The technology is as follows:
- the room warms up to + 50o;
- the film is pre-pressed in the corners, the end with the base mark is attached first;
- directed heat flow increases the temperature of the material to 70°;
- fix the panel at the corners - tuck it into the groove, starting from the base point;
- insert the film into the grooves of the baguettes around the entire perimeter;
- cover the joints with a decorative cover.
Fabric stretch ceilings are installed in a similar way. The differences are as follows:
- work is performed at normal temperature without the use of heating devices;
- fastening the fabric begins from one of the middle points of the wall;
- intermediate fastenings are made along the central marks of the remaining walls;
- Finally, the panel is wound in the direction - from the middle to the corner.
Choice of colors
The color of the stretch ceiling in the hallway affects the overall composition. Possible design options to consider:
- the combination of white gloss and white walls will visually expand the interior space;
- when installing a ceiling with several levels, a dark center with light edges goes well;
- interior lighting looks great with a translucent ceiling;
- black gloss will add mystery to the design of the room.
The choice of canvas is made before installation of the structure. For proper design, it is necessary to calculate the placement of lighting elements in advance.
We looked at various design options for a stretch ceiling. White stretch ceilings in the hallway allow you to visually expand the room and create a neutral atmosphere. They smooth out the violation of the geometric proportions of the room and add home comfort to it.
Lighting design in halls
Lighting in the hallway can be:
- central.
- combined (using additional illuminating sources);
- distributed (only spotlights are used as lighting devices).
A fashionable trend remains a lighting scheme in which low-power lamps on the ceiling provide low overall illumination, and wall sconces illuminate the necessary areas, emphasizing the expressiveness of certain interior items.
Requirements for the characteristics of lighting devices:
- lamp power is limited - 60 W;
- direction of light – to the sides or towards the floor;
- lamps with a high heating coefficient are located at a distance of 30 cm from the film.
It is not necessary to use incandescent lamps in the hallway - LED emitters or fiber optic cables are sufficient, through which light is delivered to specified points.
With the help of spotlights, zones of diffused light are created in the hallway, when the source is not visible from the side, and reflected rays create intricate, expressive highlights on the surface of the film.
