Curtains are a stylish and bright accent in the design of any modern room. What trends has 2021 brought? What types of curtains and color options are in fashion? We'll tell you about all the design innovations and show you more than a hundred interesting photographs of modern interiors.
- Basic shades - timeless classics
- Eclecticism
- Fashionable curtains to order
Curtains have long ceased to be just a piece of fabric designed to protect a room from excess light during the day and hide it from prying eyes at night. Modern curtains are an equal decorative element, like a stylish vase or an interesting painting. This means that you need to take the choice of curtains for any room in your apartment very seriously and take into account the main trends prevailing in the design environment. So, do you want to incorporate not only stylish, but also fashionable design into yours? Then let's figure out what advice designers give us on choosing curtains for the living room in the coming year.
Naturalness is in fashion
A general trend in the design world, which is gaining more and more popularity every season, is the desire to choose the most natural materials. This applies to both finishing materials, when choosing which we are increasingly encouraged to pay attention to environmentally friendly wood or MDF (who can afford what), and materials used in room decor - decorative panels, textiles, etc.
Thus, the most preferable choice would be curtains made from natural materials - variations of cotton, linen, silk and other plant fibers. However, there is nothing stopping you from choosing a fabric that better suits the overall style of your living room.
Textile | Characteristics |
Velvet | The basis of the fabric can be silk, cotton, nylon. The fibers are stretched through the base - short and thick, giving the velvet a special texture. |
Taffeta | Made from silk or synthetic fibers. The texture is heavy, rustling, smooth. Has a shimmering surface. |
Mora | Most often made of silk, it has a wavy iridescent pattern. |
Jacquard | It is made with intricate weaving and has an interesting ornament. |
Brocade | Jacquard weave, voluminous, textured patterns. |
Satin | Consists of cotton fibers and has a slight sheen. |
Jute | A rather coarse fabric made from natural plant fibers, jute. |
Veil | Usually made of cotton or silk, it has a light texture with sewn-in patterns. |
Chiffon | A derivative of silk fibers, a thin, transparent fabric. |
Tulle | Thin fabric with a mesh structure. |
How to sew curtains for the living room with your own hands
If you are a creative craftswoman, then it is quite possible for you to sew products for the hall yourself.
A straight curtain is made and a decoration for it is designed. Before sewing the curtains, measure the parameters of the cornice and the length from it to the floor. For beautiful folds, the length should be 2-3 rubles less than the width. Then buy the right fabric and start sewing and designing it yourself. Photo - 43 French curtains in the living room
Important! If you have chosen a material with an ornament and a product made from two fabrics, buy more fabric to adjust the match of the pattern.
Follow the order of operation:
- moisten, dry and iron the fabric before cutting;
- lay out the cut and make a pattern;
- iron and stitch the seams;
- sew on the braid;
- hang curtains.

What type of curtains are trending?
Light and weightless
Modern interiors love space and lightness. Even the popular loft style has recently been increasingly simplified by designers using light curtains made of thin transparent fabrics.
Tulle, chiffon, veil - these are the materials that will allow you to create a beautiful, weightless interior.
By the way, despite the fact that white is the most fashionable choice of the 2017 season, no one limits you in choosing the color for curtains in the living room. Bright and rich natural shades will perfectly complement the weightless structure of the curtains and become a significant accent of its modern interior.
Volume and drape
It would seem that voluminous curtains and the use of drapery are a trend that directly contradicts the previous one, calling us to abandon the complex decor of curtains in favor of lightness and simplicity. But it's not that simple!
If you want to create an interesting accent in your living room with the help of voluminous curtains, pay attention to lightweight materials, such as brocade or taffeta, that have texture. This way, you can achieve the desired volume without burdening the living room space.
Eyelets and rings
For those who don’t know, let’s explain: eyelets are rings made of metal or plastic, thanks to which the curtain is strung on the cornice. Such curtains look very original and are an interesting piece of decor in themselves, even in a single color without additional prints.
The use of eyelets is possible not only for curtains made of dense material, but also for light fabrics. Simply seal the top layer of curtains with any suitable material of dense texture.
The laconicism of Roman blinds
Roman curtains recently began to be fully used in design projects for living rooms and halls. This option is not only practical, but also very interesting.
There are three main types of Roman blinds:
- reflective;
- light scattering;
- day Night.
What are their main differences?
Reflective Roman blinds are made from fabrics that reflect light. The use of this option will be more justified in a bedroom or nursery, where excess light is perceived as a hindrance to relaxation, but not in a living room, especially a modern one.
Light-diffusing Roman blinds, on the other hand, diffuse the light that hits them and are well suited for use in living rooms.
Roman blinds of the “day-night” type are an excellent compromise option. Their peculiarity lies in the alternation of strips of dense and light fabric (therefore they are often called “zebra” curtains). These curtains are attached in two layers with the ability to adjust the location of the stripes on both layers. For example, if you want to darken a space, simply adjust the curtains so that the thick stripes of one layer overlap the sheer stripes of the second. Accordingly, in order to let more light into the room, you need to combine stripes of the same type with each other.
Roman curtains in the interior of the hall can be perfectly combined with classic curtains of any type - both thick, light-proof materials and light transparent fabrics.
Originality of Japanese curtains
Japanese curtains are a fashionable trend in living room design in 2021, and there are several explanations for this.
- National color and ethnic elements in design have recently become increasingly popular.
- Japanese style is minimalist, and minimalism has been in favor with designers for several seasons now.
- Since curtains are an additional decoration, choosing Japanese designed curtains is a sure way to add an interesting accent to your room.
So, what are Japanese curtains? Japanese, or panel, curtains consist of a cornice and fabric panels. The mechanism of movement of fabric sheets along the cornice is reminiscent of sliding doors.
Japanese curtains are an excellent choice for those who have a living room with large, wide windows! Unfortunately, for small windows, Japanese curtains can serve as an extra “weight” that hides the space.
Functional types of curtains
If you have already decided on the style, then you should definitely choose fairly functional curtains for the hall. New or old classics? It is necessary to understand what designers offer.
Lambrequins are decorations on the top of curtains that have no special functions. It is attached to the first layer and creates a romantic atmosphere.
Short curtains. An excellent option for lovers of modern style. They are decorated with patterns, drawings, and do not collect excess dust. Plain short curtains add a working and serious mood.
Rings - eyelets - special fastenings for curtains, which are located in the holes of the fabric itself. Easily removed from curtains.
The article provides samples from which you can choose “your” curtains for the hall (photo). The design depends not only on the interior of the room itself, but also on the character of the owner. Choose what you like, regardless of fashion trends. Pay attention to the functionality and mood that new curtains will give to you and the whole family.

Color trends
Basic shades - timeless classics
The 2017 season develops the desire for simplicity inherited from 2015. The use of basic tones in the design of rooms, such as gray, black, beige and - especially! – white is the main leitmotif of fashion design projects.
The universal white color will perfectly cope with the task of lightening heavy interiors, adding a fresh touch, and transforming a small living room. This choice is suitable for those who do not want to focus on textiles, but prefer to diversify the interior with other bright colors, be it furniture or interesting lamps.
Dark curtains are another classic option that can make the interior a little stricter. If you choose dark curtains, match them to the upholstery of upholstered furniture, lampshades of floor lamps or the color of sofa cushions.
As for the relationship between the colors of decoration and curtains in a modern room, here the designers give us a certain scope for creative ideas. Curtains that match the tone of the main finish or those that play with it in contrast will look equally stylish.
Freshness of natural shades
Shades of nature itself are popular everywhere - be it the kitchen, bedroom, hallway or living room. Here are the main tones that you should pay attention to when choosing the ideal curtain option among the new products:
- blue;
- green;
- brown;
- walnut;
- Marsala;
- turquoise;
- amber;
- citric.
Colored curtains can easily make your living room more interesting, so don't be afraid to experiment with combinations. The eternal rule “curtains to match the textiles” is no longer dominant. Choose curtains to match other decorative or finishing elements if you are not using a solid color scheme.
Enliven the interior of the hall with bright curtains in natural tones, and it will become not only a great place to relax, but also a place that gives you a charge of positive energy!
Prints and patterns - an original touch to your design
If plain curtains, even in rich natural shades, seem too boring to you, designers have something to offer you in 2021.
So, which patterns seem to be the most fashionable this season?
- animal prints and images of animals;
- large flowers;
- geometric figures;
- stripes;
- futuristic prints;
- Photo curtains.
As you can see, the scope for imagination is greater than ever!
Duplicating the curtain pattern in other decorative elements will help you combine them all into a single space in the room.
Japanese style panels
Japanese curtains are the most popular this season. In 2021, designers recommend:
- Combine several stripes of different textures on one window opening. For example, voile and satin fabrics, organza and jute, silk and tapestry.
- Hang about a dozen panels of different shades at once. Two-layer is considered especially fashionable.
- Use fabric with complex patterns and photo printing.
The living room is the calling card of a house or apartment. In its arrangement you need to carefully think through everything, especially the curtains. After all, if chosen incorrectly, they can ruin the most stylish design. Therefore, you should not spare effort in choosing suitable curtains for the living room.
We select curtains to match the overall design style of the room
We have already written in more detail about the styles of hall decoration that are fashionable this season. Let's take a closer look at which curtains are best suited to fashionable interiors.
Eclecticism
Eclectic style is extremely popular in the coming season! The combination of the incongruous, executed with feeling, sense and proper arrangement - this is the key to creating a truly unique interior.
Don’t think that creating an interior in an eclectic style is easy, and it’s enough to simply combine elements of different styles in one space. A proper and stylish eclectic interior does not leave a feeling of excess, and only professionals can achieve such an effect!
When choosing curtains for a room in an eclectic style, you should pay attention to options with interesting prints and patterns. The best solution would be large flowers and geometric shapes. Curtains with stripes or futuristic patterns will also look great.
Minimalism
Minimalism presupposes laconicism in the design of upholstered furniture and facades of storage systems, the use of simple light colors in decoration with bright accents, as well as the rejection of excessive decor.
The ideal solution for a room in a minimalist style would be simple, light curtains in light colors (ideally white).
Roman blinds and Japanese curtains, which are becoming increasingly popular, will fit perfectly into such an interior.
Eco style
The very name of this style suggests the maximum use of natural materials in the decoration, furnishings and decoration of the room.
When planning to decorate a room in an eco-style, turn to curtains made from natural materials such as cotton, linen, silk, etc.
It is also better to choose a natural color scheme - shades of white, beige, grey, green, blue, yellow are suitable.
It is acceptable to use prints and patterns that have a connection with nature. For example, photo curtains depicting exotic flowers, plants or animals, which are gaining popularity this season, will fit perfectly into this style.
Art Deco
Art Deco is the style of the glamorous elite of the mid-20th century. Smooth forms, chic and simplicity are harmoniously combined in the art deco style room.
Having completed the overall decoration of the room in light colors, give preference to dark furniture, the tone of which should also be matched with curtains.
Art Deco accepts the use of not only plain curtains, but also interesting patterns, often geometric, mentally returning us to the era of golden Hollywood, which gave us this wonderful style, which is currently experiencing a new heyday.
Pop Art
Choosing pop art in the design of the hall will allow you to look at its space from a new angle. As a basic background for experiments, it is best to choose a neutral color scheme, preferably in white tones.
Accents in a pop art style interior are set with the help of interesting decor, and curtains will cope with this task perfectly.
Pop art is the case when you shouldn’t be afraid of rich colors and flashy prints. The main thing is that the final result, as in the case of eclecticism, is not overly overloaded with details that do not allow one to fully perceive the whole picture.
Classic
Finally, we cannot fail to mention the classics, since the classics, as we know, never go out of fashion. So it is now - in the coming season there will definitely be a place for a living room in a classic style.
If “classic classics” is too heavy for you, turn to neoclassical design options, which, while preserving the traditions of classic interiors, look fresher and more organic in a modern space.
Curtains for this style are voluminous and with drapery. But don’t forget about the usual, simplest curtains that can be skillfully combined with Roman ones.
Curtains for curtains: choose wisely
To emphasize the style and originality of curtains, we advise you to wisely combine them with curtains, because the color scheme of the latter is also important.
The hits of this year's season are represented by gray, turquoise, purple and all kinds of shades of these colors. A hall decorated in a lilac, violet and lilac background will seem more colorful in terms of color. In addition, the designers' recommendations come down to a combination of lilac and mustard tones. When choosing curtains for the living room, you should give preference to rich and intense colors that fit perfectly into the design of the room, while emphasizing its individual details. It is not recommended to choose overly drooping and faded colors, because even a masterfully brought to life project can disappear against the background of an impersonal texture. The rich and bright colors of the color palette are the undeniable favorites of this season. They will visually adjust the proportions of the room and give it a sense of integrity along with a predominance over the ordinary.
For people who don’t like to experiment, a classic option is suitable that will never get boring - white tulle and plain dark curtains.
Curtains for the living room with kitchen
Modern apartment layouts often combine two zones - the kitchen and the living room. Some people don’t like this option, while others, on the contrary, like the combination of spaces for different purposes into a single whole. But one way or another, such a layout is a frequent companion of modern apartments, which means that the question often arises: how to choose curtains for such a room?
In choosing curtains, as in choosing a design in general, you have, by and large, two main paths:
- distinguish between the kitchen area and the recreation area using finishing and decor;
- combine zones into a single space.
In the first case, we still recommend using materials of similar texture and color in the decoration and design of different zones, so as not to cut the room into two pieces, since this can play a cruel joke on you, making the space of the room visually smaller.
Use different shades of the same color to decorate the kitchen and relaxation areas.
When choosing decor, choose, for example, classic curtains or eyelet curtains for the living area and Roman blinds to match them for the kitchen area.
In the second case, you can decorate the zones in the same color, using similar decor, and choose the same curtains for the windows in the kitchen area and in the living room area.
Main trends of 2017
Although the fashion for curtains is not as changeable as Haute Couture, it still has its own new items that everyone who chooses textiles for their apartment should know about.
- This year everything natural and close to nature will be popular. And the curtains, as evidenced by the photos of the new products, were not left out. Not only natural materials are in fashion, but also colors and prints that identify nature. Already now we can safely say that silk, cotton, linen and organza will be in favor. Linen occupies a special position - a highly durable and easy-to-care material. Bamboo curtains and solutions that combine natural fabrics and synthetics will be relevant.
- Another main feature in the design of the new season is monotony. Designers are confident that even one correctly selected base shade can recreate the character of an entire room. And you can easily agree with them if you look at the interior photos. Here the well-known rule works perfectly: the lighter the wallpaper, the more saturated the color the curtains should be, and vice versa. However, this does not mean that you cannot hang white organza curtains in a room with snow-white walls. Interior stylists allow such a merger. And judging by the photo, this technique doesn’t even look bad.
- Another trend that has been popular for several seasons is single-layer. If you want your interior to be up-to-date, then use only curtains or only tulles to decorate your windows. Both options in one composition are already multi-layered.
What to do if there are no ideal curtains anywhere?
Fashionable curtains to order
It also happens that you have created an interesting design project that takes into account all your preferences, but you can’t find suitable curtains for it. As in the famous Soviet film: “I would like the same, but with mother-of-pearl buttons.” It seems that you find a suitable color, but the material is not at all what you would like, or, conversely, the material is found, but the suitable color is not.
In such a case, you can contact the studio. This choice will allow you to realize your interior design idea as accurately as possible. Of course, this option will most likely cost a little more than ready-made store-bought ones, but you will get exactly what you wanted.
The cost of sewing simple curtains with tulle for two windows, excluding material, is about 2,500 rubles.
Non-standard windows - we drape beautifully and practically
Often the living room is a spacious room combined with the kitchen and dining room. The open layout of such spaces is found both in private houses and in apartments. In country houses, such premises are equipped with several options for window openings - these can be windows of different sizes, or large glass doors, which also require textile decoration. In modern design projects, you can find the use of not only curtains of different designs for decorating windows that are different in shape and size, but also different material options for textile drapery of window and door openings.
If your living room has a bay window, then the issue of draping large windows becomes very acute. In some modern design projects, panoramic windows or window openings of standard sizes in a bay window are recommended not to be decorated with textiles at all. But for rooms located on the south side, this option is not always practical. You can use translucent tulle in light shades, which, on the one hand, will not significantly affect the formation of the color palette of the image of the room, but on the other hand, will properly perform its functions.
For a semicircular bay window, you can use a cornice with an arc base. Such models are difficult to find on wide sale; as a rule, such a purchase requires a pre-order, but the effort and money spent are worth it. On such curtain rods, the curtains “ride” smoothly along the bay window and can provide sun protection for the owners and their guests.
Large French windows with an arched top look royally luxurious. Such externally attractive designs, allowing the room to literally bathe in an abundance of sunlight, must be decorated with dignity. Many folds of taffeta curtains will be an elegant completion not only of the window image, but also of the living room interior as a whole.
In a living room with large windows located from floor to ceiling, you can use intermediate curtain panels - thus, the window is decorated on three sides (there is often a double panel in the middle) and, if necessary, the entire area of the panoramic window will be closed from the sun's rays or prying eyes.
