It's autumn outside, and in the interiors... there are new trends!
Cold weather and self-isolation are the ideal time to improve your home and refresh the interior of your apartment or house. What will be fashionable this season? Meet the leading interior trends for 2021, what will be fashionable, what colors, what furniture, what finishing materials. Although certain trends may persist for several seasons, every year designers add a little twist to fashion. Interior design trends 2021 are a response to the urgent need for stability and security. Muted colors, natural materials and streamlined shapes create an impression of harmony and comfort. The apartment is designed as a refuge where we can freely express ourselves, play, work and relax.
Boho style
In winter 2021, boho style will prevail in the interior. It captivates with its festive ease, naturalness and unpretentiousness. A space furnished in this style promotes relaxation and improves mood. On cold, cloudy days, a boho interior allows you to forget about the gray weather outside and transport your thoughts to a sun-warmed beach or green lawn.
Boho style can take many forms. Most often it is combined with Scandinavian style, creating the perfect combination of modern shapes and ethnic decorations. Interiors decorated in the Scandinavian boho style require greater restraint in the choice of colors and accessories, but at the same time they are more cozy and tidy. They are based on the use of natural materials, light colors, living plants, woven accessories and furniture. This trend has become increasingly relevant in recent years. Boho is an ideal choice for small apartments where there is no place for dark colors and massive appliances.

In the spirit of eco
Interior design trends bring the natural world into the composition. More and more plants, environmental solutions, natural fabrics and materials are appearing in interiors.
Along with the boho style, fashion trends 2021 are reviving the fashion for wicker furniture and accessories. The interiors are again decorated with products made from natural wicker, elegant wicker chairs, rattan and bamboo products. Furniture made from these materials is light, comfortable, and goes well with the fashionable beige color.
If an imitation of natural materials is chosen, it must be reliable and of high quality. This is especially noticeable in kitchens and bathrooms, where veneer countertops are being replaced by durable composites and conglomerates, and large-format quartz agglomerates are replacing tiles and panels.
We began to spend more and more time in our apartments and houses, so it is worth significantly improving the quality of the interior. Communication with nature is becoming increasingly valuable; living in big cities, we crave it more and more. The easiest way to bring natural elements into our home is to enrich it with potted plants.
At the renovation stage, you need to pay attention to the choice of paint, plaster, furniture upholstery, curtain fabric or flooring material. The use of natural bases in the form of flooring or upholstery, of course, is associated with higher costs. Therefore, you can start by buying linen pillows, wicker baskets, rattan elements, or even buy a wooden stool to act as an auxiliary table. Eco-friendly materials form the basis of many fashion trends for the coming year.
Digital technologies
We live in the era of digital technology. Achievements of progress dictate their own rules in the field of interior design. With the advent of new high-quality standards of living, the living space we are accustomed to is changing. Digital innovations make life more convenient and comfortable. Their use helps save time on solving various household tasks. Taking into account the aesthetics of the space, they help create a cozy atmosphere and psychological comfort in your home or office. This is very important, because a person spends most of his time at home and at work.
Among digital innovations in interior design, the following inventions are relevant:
- digital wallpaper - a finishing material called Pac Man was created by Austrian specialists working in the Strukt Design Studio; in order to see the amazing visual effect, you need to point the beam of a video projector at the wall in complete darkness, the image can be changed at the request of the owner of the house;
- a new Swedish design technology called Hembio is embodied in the idea of creating an entertaining and useful platform that includes audio, video systems and household appliances;
- scientists - employees of the American laboratory of the New York Times invented a digital mirror and called it Snow White, it visually and acoustically tells the viewer which tie is best suited to a particular suit, what wardrobe items you have, etc., the device operates through the World Wide Web;
- Smart Home technology has recently gained great popularity ; it allows a person to interact as much as possible with the living space by transferring information from mobile devices to sensors that regulate heating, lighting and other engineering systems that ensure comfort in the home.
Of course, new technologies make our lives better. But when deciding on organizing your living space, you need to weigh the pros and cons. Perhaps you shouldn’t overload the interior with technical innovations, but choose a couple of current concepts. Then your home will not lose its comfort and will not turn into a high-tech office.
Vintage design
Vintage trends are gaining momentum from season to season. People want to live eco-friendly and surround themselves with unique items, so they often use second-hand items. They take grandma's dishes out of basements and closets, visit flea markets in search of unique ceramics, iconic furniture or antique toys.
Warning! When decorating the interior with vintage elements, moderation should be observed. Otherwise, the apartment will resemble a museum or a cramped space. The best effect can be achieved by combining old furniture and accessories with modern decorative elements.

Japanese style interspersed with Scandinavian
This is a temptation for supporters of the Scandinavian style, the so-called “Japandi” style. Both Japanese and Scandinavian styles are characterized by simplicity, minimalism and functionality. The addition of Japanese influences makes this trend even more focused on simplicity, harmony and, above all, functionality. Such interiors will be dominated by white, wood, natural materials and organic forms. Followers of this fashion trend will not need unnecessary trinkets, colorful pillows or colorful patterns. Everything here should have a calming effect, like a warm cup of tea on a rainy evening.

Svetlana Dikushina: “I don’t follow such boring facts as the “new” trends of the coming year”

“I don’t follow trends - in my opinion, it’s much more interesting to create them yourself. And that’s why I don’t follow such boring facts as the “new” trends of the coming year. Working outside the rules is the best that the present time can allow: now is the era of permissiveness!
Natural materials, and with them shades, are always relevant - this is a story about tactility and comfort. Genuine nobility.
As for smart technologies in our lives, I turn to them extremely rarely: there is little demand for them from customers. And those who have smart technologies at home, as a rule, use them extremely rarely. I think developers need to think of an even simpler approach to using such “messages” in our already sophisticated lives.

You also need to be careful with transformers in the interior. This trend is more relevant for small spaces and children's rooms, especially boys. However, I like to use transformers in my projects when, for example, I don’t want to demonstrate the obvious fact of the workspace of the same kitchen or office.
Perhaps the most interesting of the proposed “trends” is rustic design. Here you can really get creative and add both modern and vintage motifs to the “rustic” one. I think it will turn out to be a good batch.
I believe that only individuals in our circle follow trends and somehow “relate” to them. Customers don't care about them. They always see everything in their own way, through their own prism of perception. We are only their reflection in the interior, with our own author’s approach to it.”
Furniture preferences of the season – velor and rounded shapes
In accordance with furniture trends, furniture with soft, streamlined shapes will be popular at the beginning of 2021. Sofas and armchairs have a round shape, and rectangular poufs and tables are replaced by models with a cylindrical shape. Round mirrors appear on the walls, lamps take the shape of glass balls. Even carpet manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, quickly introducing circular patterns into their offerings.
In furniture production, trends have not changed much. The design of the sofas has not changed significantly compared to the previous season. Sofas, poufs and armchairs covered with shiny velvet are still in fashion. Gray sofas are being replaced by models in rich colors:
- mustard yellow,
- sea blue,
- bottle green.
Alina Lavrenchenko: “When creating an interior, trends are not the most important thing”
Architect and interior designer Alina Lavrenchenko.
Architect and interior designer Alina Lavrenchenko.
“Fashion dictates to the interior designer where to move, in what direction to work, but when creating an interior this is not the most important thing. You shouldn’t pay attention solely to what’s fashionable and what’s in trend now: there are timeless interior items that will never lose their relevance and will almost always be in place. Take, for example, the Wire chair by the Eameses, released in 1951, or the Basculant by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret (1928) - both will suit both eclectic interiors and ultra-modern, minimalist design.
Of course, I always pay attention to the customer’s lifestyle, his needs and tastes. If, relatively speaking, the color Marsala is in fashion this season, but the client categorically does not like this color, then, of course, this color cannot be used, no matter how trendy it may be. Or, for example, this color may not suit the interior: if all the windows of the room are directed to the north and there is very little natural light, then this color will only worsen the perception of the room.

Most often, my customers love fashionable things, both in clothing and in the interior, so they follow trends and ask “what is fashionable now, what is popular, what is most often done,” but we always talk through and work out how some things can be on trend, but inconvenient for everyday use.
When it comes to current trends, I am most inspired by natural shades. We are currently working on a new project, where the color scheme is based on soft pastel colors and the absence of obvious contrast. We turned to the palette of the English brand of designer paints, where we chose earthy green, terracotta and soft natural gray-beige colors.”
Home Office
Home offices are likely to become the norm. Recent months have shown that it is very important to allocate space in the house for a table and a comfortable chair. Therefore, the main theme of the coming year will be the design of a minimalist work area. If you're short on space for a home office, there's probably an area in your home that hasn't been considered yet - like the hallway!
Original L-shaped tables are a great way to optimize space. The screen can separate the work area and ensure there are no distractions while working.
Kitchen hits
Technological innovations are increasingly being used in kitchens. Thanks to them, the room takes on a new quality. In 2021, the focus is on comfort, functionality and space. A carefully processed surface and minimalism are the key to a fashionable and comfortable kitchen. It is worth joining the search for oriental colors or bright patterns. Travelers may introduce items to which they are very attached to the kitchen. Based on the Scandinavian style, it is worth decorating the interior with practical things.
White continues to dominate kitchens as a background or furniture. It can be easily combined with green, brown or shades of beige. Warm accessories and colors are an option for those who do not feel comfortable in damp interiors. Plants look great in the kitchen and add charm to it.

Not enough glamour? Choose velvet furniture in dark purple or red colors. Fans of mid-century modern will love red, green or blue furniture finishes.
Bathroom Design Trends
The coming 2021 remains a year of prevailing minimalism, aesthetic forms and functionality. On the catwalk, white is timeless, muted colors, asymmetrical patterns, floral patterns and original tile patterns. Black elements and even entire bathrooms are also in fashion this year! Shower mixers, washbasins, showers and bathtubs or shower trays in black. For some, such a space may be too dark, so manufacturers offer accessories in the form of white elements. This combination guarantees a stylish bathroom that will not go out of style for a long time.
If a dark or contrasting bathroom design is not suitable, white is still the king of bathrooms, emphasizing the cleanliness and hygienic purpose of the room. It's worth adding some plants or some pops of color! Wood is still in fashion. Scandinavian arrangements have a huge influence - this style delights with natural beauty and unity with nature. It is worth taking care of fashionable accessories: wooden glasses for toothbrushes or soap dishes.
In 2021, it is worth taking care of the right lighting, varied and adapted to the functions of the bathroom. You can consider ceiling lighting, LED strips or lamps next to the mirror.

Interior colors 2021
Color trends in 2021 design are associated with an interest in ecology and a desire to return to nature. After a challenging 2021, the new season brings soothing tones, offering mostly creamy shades and vibrant natural materials, enriched with a balanced dose of extravagant, rich colors.
Beige and gray
The coming months will be marked by a neutral color palette, with beige being key. Once it was faded, today it is considered the most fashionable on the Instagram network. Beige interiors, like beige styles, delight with elegance, simplicity and timeless character.
Interior trends for 2021 are pushing for the creation of a beige total look. Fashionable interiors combine different tones of beige:
- sand,
- coffee with milk,
- flavored caramel,
- spicy cinnamon.
Together they create a sensual and warming blend, perfect for cold days.
When decorating a beige interior, you need to carefully choose accessories.
Perfect for beige decor:
- fluffy rug with diamonds on the floor;
- patterned pillows on the sofa;
- handmade ceramics, especially tableware made of stoneware, glass and clay;
- the living room and bedroom can be decorated with compositions of dried plants, for example, pampas grass, exotic palm trees and ficus;
- in elegant interiors it is worth using shiny accents - gold or silver handles, mirror frames, photo frames.
Another trend in fashion trends is creating interiors in gray and beige tones. This trend is commonly known as "wasabi sabi". By combining these two colors, you can create a cozy space, which is further emphasized by large windows that allow a solid dose of daylight into the room. Natural fabrics (linen, cotton) and strong accents, for example, a large sofa covered in leather, or a woolen carpet with an expressive pattern, are perfect for such projects. It's also worth adding some impressive potted indoor plants.
Floral range
The American Pantone Institute has dominated the field of color trends for many years. Among the prepared trends in color solutions, the most interesting impression is made by the “Color Trends Highlights” report, which includes 3 palettes of fashionable colors in interiors in 2021.
- Summer Bouqet - 7 flowers related to flowers that bloom in mid-summer. These are shades of pink and purple combined with washed out olive green.
- Intoxicating – 6 creamy shades of purple, blue, yellow and green. The palette refers to the blue sky and lavender inflorescences, heated by the hot sun.
- Power Surge is a real energy hit! Power Surge is a set of 8 colors reminiscent of the neon lights of a big city. Intense red, navy blue, mango orange and lime green are popular colors here.
Azure and green
The well-known company WGSN (Worth Global Style Network) is closely monitoring the 2021 color trends in the interior. Guided by a modern approach to color psychology, she developed a set of 5 key colors that should be in harmony with the human body and mind.
- I. Aqua - an azure shade of blue, the color of the year according to WGSN. It reflects the development of digitization and the passion for artificial intelligence.
- Quiet Wave is a creamy shade of green. Calming, refreshing, close to nature.
- Oxy Fire – bloody red. Rich, proud, immediately attracting attention.
- Lemon Sherbet is a delicate yellow color. Sherbet symbolizes the pleasant effects of the sun and has a calming effect.
- Good Gray is a calming bluish shade of gray. Will be a great partner for many flowers and a great solo.
Warm brown tones
The color palette created by the famous wall paint manufacturer Dulux is dominated by brown, hidden under the name Brave Ground – Power of the Earth. This is a warm, enveloping color, symbolizing a return to nature, stability, and protection of the earth element.
The colors of 2021, ideal for combination with Power of the Earth, are collected by the company in 4 palettes.
- Proven colors - for lovers of classics and minimalism. A palette of 10 tones of brown and gray will provide a reliable base for classic, Scandinavian, minimalist and modern compositions. A skillful combination of shades included in the palette will help create an elegant and cozy interior. Wooden furniture and natural materials will look great in it.
- Timeless colors - a set based on browns and grays with a heavy dose of rust and mustard shades. The palette is perfect for the kitchen, dining room, home office. Furniture of geometric, modern shapes, and modernism look good against the background of walls of these tones.
- Earthy colors are a soothing palette full of blue tones, from navy to sea hues, serene azure to washed out blues and blue greys. The set will fit into any room.
- Expressive colors – rich tones of pink and brown with washed out gray predominate. The palette is associated with a summer bouquet - the combination of colors is romantic and sensual, but, thanks to cooler colors, avoids excesses. Suitable for a modern women's bedroom, children's bedroom. This set with lots of beige and gray can be used in the kitchen, living room.
Shades of pink and earth tones
In the interiors of 2021, the fashion trend will be multifunctional furniture with oval shapes and velor coverings. Their elegance is emphasized by the pastel colors of the upholstery - delicate shades of pink, similar to the Summer Bouqet palette. Natural materials in creamy neutral shades are also gaining popularity in the wake of the transition to ecology.
Fashionable colors in the interior in 2021 are mainly colors associated with nature, for example, in the Intoxicating palette from Pantone. They will decorate the interior and will look great against the background of walls in bright tones, coverings on furniture in colors:
- beige,
- gray,
- mint,
- lavender,
- creamy yellow.
Yellow, optimistic tones are suitable for the kitchen, living room or dining room. A soft green color with a calming character, ideal for the bedroom and living room.

Different shades of wood
Turning to nature means turning to natural materials, recycling and vintage furniture. In 2021, wood is chosen in interiors - in all its variety of colors and tones.
Depending on the style of the interior, the wood may be different:
- When decorating in a minimalist, modern or scandi style, light wood furniture is used.
- If you like retro style, you can create a composition in the spirit of art deco or mid-century modern, use walnut-colored wood - these can be original objects of that era or elements stylized as antiques.
Fashionable color combinations for 2021 combine wood with black metal elements:
- brass color
- gray concrete,
- extremely popular agglomerates that imitate natural stone.
The trend for rattan and wicker continues unabated, the natural light color of which will add lightness to any interior.
However, in 2021, dark wenge boards or bleached pine will not be in fashion. The most neutral proposals, treated with oils, are gaining popularity, maximizing the unique texture of precious wood.
Optimistic pink
2021 is the time to look for positive incentives that will drive away bad thoughts. Rich colors can cure the blues at home! They should be treated as an invigorating breakthrough against a neutral base of natural beiges and earthy colors. Cheerful colors will bring a lot of joyful aura and improve your mood.
Experts advise using dark and dirty shades of pink. It is better to use them classically in the form of wall decoration or furniture, or more unusually - as a grout between tiles in blue and green shades or soft-touch textiles that can be changed depending on the mood.
The coming year will be marked by pastel shades, natural fabrics and materials. The palettes prepared by the analysts are dominated by the colors of earth, pink and red blooming flowers, green and various shades of blue.
Eternal white
The fashionable colors for walls in an apartment in 2021 include white! Classic never goes out of style and goes well with heavy furniture firmly rooted in vintage style, as well as light Scandinavian chests of drawers or almost invisible built-in wardrobes. By paying a little attention to the theme of the decor, you can perfectly fit quite dark elements into a white interior, creating very effective contrasts.
The past year was full of amazing events that left their mark on everyday life. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we spent more and more time at home in 2021. Many people have devoted these moments to remodeling their apartments. The interior design has become more comfortable. In 2021, people will be more willing to buy indoor plants, more comfortable furniture, or warmer lighting. Houses and apartments became a refuge, a place of work, meeting and relaxation, which radically changed their character. Minimalist trends have disappeared from the interior design palette of apartments and houses. They are being replaced in 2021 by coziness, muted, natural and inspiring colors, used individually and in original combinations full of warmth and harmony. These are the main trends that will form the basis for interiors in the coming year.
