Tepidarium is a room with dry warm air. The temperature here, just like in the caldarium, is maintained at 37-45⁰C, but the humidity is much lower, only 30%. The tepidarium is equipped with marble beds and armchairs. Heating, as in all rooms of the Roman baths, is carried out from below. The tepidarium is comfortable for a fairly long stay. After visiting it, the body will require replenishment of moisture.

Frigidarium is a cool room with a swimming pool, where you go after visiting the tepidarium and caldarium to refresh and relax.

“Saturday - dacha - bathhouse” - for many, the logical chain of weekend pleasures looks exactly like this. But are you sure that you are going to the bathhouse that is most beneficial? Sputnik found out which relkas is more useful: on the floors of a Russian steam room or on a marble slab of an oriental hammam.

If you have no contraindications from the cardiovascular system, you do not suffer from high blood pressure, then regularly visiting the steam room is a great way to exercise your blood vessels and reduce the risk of colds, and at the same time heart disease.

What good does a bathhouse give us?

Numerous studies confirm that those who regularly visit the steam room improve the functioning of the heart muscle, reduce the risk of blood clots, and experience virtually no depression.

In the final analysis, good and regular steam prolongs life. Research is now being conducted to show that regular exposure to high temperatures can destroy tumors.

But we do not recommend checking it - this is still only an assumption that has not yet been proven by clinical trials.

Exotic lovers can learn from the experience of a country where there are very few fat people. Not the least role in this was played by the traditional ofuro bathhouse, which is a wooden barrel with hot water (45°C), under which there is a stove. They take a barrel bath almost every day. In addition to ofuro, Japan has modern sawdust baths for weight loss: cedar sawdust is mixed with chopped wood, leaves, medicinal and aromatic herbs, the mixture is placed on a special bed and heated to approximately 60°C. The person is buried up to his neck in the healing mixture for 15 minutes. A person sweats, sawdust absorbs sweat and transfers beneficial substances to the body. Such a bath, according to Japanese doctors, “resolves” fat deposits well and rejuvenates the skin. The method can be adopted, especially since we have something similar in our villages, where they practice wrapping larch and pine trees with paws... Perhaps sawdust and pine needles will become a “fashionable feature” of the coming bathing seasons.

We seem to have figured out what a Turkish hammam is, now it’s worth assessing the positive impact that a hammam sauna has on the human body:

  • Hamam bath is an area of ​​low temperature, about 35-60 degrees Celsius, and high humidity from 80 to 100%. In addition, the temperature gradation is very soft and it gradually changes downward from the walls to the middle of the room. The traditions of taking procedures in the hammam involve gradual cooling of the body, moving from one zone to another. Mild warmth and high humidity are the determining factors in determining what a Turkish bath is, a hammam, for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system and clinical signs of hypertension. It is this kind of bath that allows patients to take bath procedures with minimal restrictions;
  • Based on the previous point, we determine how a hammam differs from a sauna. Indeed, in addition to the low temperature, the oriental bathhouse does not accept the use of sudden temperature jumps, when, after strong warming up of the body, cooling occurs, say, in an ice hole. Yes, such gymnastics for blood vessels helps to increase their tone and elasticity, but this is true for an absolutely healthy person, but not for a hypertensive person;
  • A large number of auxiliary procedures, such as foam and oil massage, goat hair peeling, have a very positive and lasting effect on cleansing the skin, maintaining skin tone, and the high-quality composition of collagen. The cosmetological effect of the hamam, as the Turkish bath is called, is perhaps one of the most significant known baths of the peoples of the world;
  • What is a hammam without relaxation, soft lighting, quiet music and fragrant steam. It is these factors that determine the success of the Turkish public bath in the fight against stress, neuroses and overexertion, not only physical, but also moral. It is not for nothing that in the historical homeland, a visit to the hammam lasts for the whole daylight hours, and very often the bathhouse functions as a kind of weekend club.

As you know, there are no ideal things, therefore, in our case, there are a number of situations in which you should still refrain from going to this beautiful place:

  1. Atypical course of pregnancy. Compared to other baths, although the temperature conditions here are mild, consultation with a doctor will not be unnecessary.
  2. Severe forms of bronchial asthma, tuberculosis and other diseases of the respiratory system in most cases do not allow long-term stay in rooms with abnormally high humidity.
  3. Dermatological diseases provoked by fungus tend to progress in conditions of elevated temperature and humidity.
  4. You should not go to the hammam during periods of exacerbation or remission of inflammatory diseases. Here, elevated temperature is a negative factor. Yes, the temperature regime is much milder, but it is still elevated.

Historical aspect

As you know, the first Russian baths were “black” baths. Such baths have an open hearth, which heats not only the stones, but also the walls of the bath. Smoke from the fireplace exits through a partially open door and an vent in the ceiling. If the firebox is not properly heated, the wood inside the bathhouse becomes heavily smoked, resulting in the walls of the bathhouse becoming dark in color.

It turns out that Finnish saunas were also “black” at first. The design of such a Finnish sauna did not differ from the design of a Russian bath, so it can be assumed that these baths differed in their approach to temperature and humidity: most likely the Russians poured water heavily, but heated less, the Finns, in turn, did the opposite. These historical aspects formed the features of modern designs of baths and bath stoves.

Relaxation that can be achieved in the hammam

For those who have weak sweating, experts recommend going to the hammam. In fact, the absence of sweat is completely incompatible with the effect for which the sauna is designed. Moreover, visiting a sauna in this case poses a real danger. On the contrary, the temperature in the hammam steam room allows you to stay there much longer and not experience much discomfort. The feeling after such a load is unusually pleasant. In addition, this is also a great way to relax your muscles after prolonged exercise in gymnastics or any other sports.

A Turkish bath allows you to thoroughly wash your entire body from head to toe. Hot, warm or steamy rooms, showers and baths ensure that the skin is cleansed in the most effective way. Wet steam softens the stratum corneum of the epidermis and dilutes sebum. As a result, both dead epidermal cells and sebum can be easily removed by simple friction. You can use a bath mitten; there are also special devices made of wood or horn. You will be surprised, and maybe even horrified, to find pellets of black dirt on your body. Believe me, there is no exaggeration here! After such a radical cleansing, the pores open, the skin begins to breathe much better, and “piles of dirt” come out of the steamed body.

While in the Turkish bath, you can make a mask, wash your hair with shampoo, and trim your nails. A massage will help you feel completely renewed. The environment in which all these actions are performed is very calm and leisurely. And if you are going to a Turkish bath, there is no need to rush. This event should take several hours, and if possible, then half a day. It is best to go to the hammam with a friend to relax and gossip together. Time will pass serenely and unnoticed, and a great mood will be guaranteed.
