Variations and designs
Manufacturers of kitchen furniture make tables of 2 types: static and folding. The first option is appropriate for spacious rooms, the second is relevant for small rooms.
The area of many modern kitchens does not exceed 10 square meters. m. Therefore, when choosing a table, the owner of such a room needs to take into account the working area, the number of residents and the frequency of visits from guests.
Transformable kitchen tables are very helpful in such circumstances. When folded, they fit into any interior, and if necessary, you can seat a large group behind them. Such models are folding or sliding.
The first ones are compact and easy to move around the apartment. When folded, these models resemble bedside tables or magazine racks. The second type of design is a regular table, which can be expanded by adding an additional plate. It is usually located under the main one. There are also models equipped with legs that allow you to change the height of the tabletop.
Materials for production
A kitchen is a room where furniture is exposed to temperature and humidity every day. Therefore, tables must be moisture- and heat-resistant, resistant to mechanical stress and fit into the surrounding interior.
Manufacturers use different materials in production:
- Solid wood. The advantages of such tables are environmental friendliness, resistance to mechanical damage, and relative ease of maintenance. Models made from this material are used in country, Provence and classic styles. The disadvantage is the high cost.
For durability, products made from hardwoods are recommended: beech, ash, oak. Soft ones are appropriate in the kitchen, where the table is rarely used.
- Laminated MDF. Intermediate material between natural wood and chipboard. Such tables last for many years and are resistant to mechanical and thermal stress. Their weak point is the edge, which is easily damaged.
- Chipboard board. Budget options for kitchen dining tables are made from this material.
- Glass. The material is resistant to changes in temperature and humidity and retains its appearance for many years. Combines with high-tech, minimalism and modern style. Disadvantages include increased fragility, difficulty in care, and tactile coldness.
- Plastic. Products made from this material can be purchased in a variety of color variations. They are easy to maintain. But compared to other materials, plastic is short-lived. When mechanically damaged, it releases substances harmful to humans.

Since 2010 I have been engaged in interior design and architectural design.
In addition to the specified raw materials, artificial and natural stone and metal are used to make designer kitchen tables. Such products are often created to order.
Tabletop shapes
Another important characteristic is the geometric shape of the tabletop. It affects the usability of both the dining area and the entire kitchen space. A correctly selected round, oval, or square will add originality to the design picture of the room, but it can also ruin everything.
For modern kitchens, there are the following countertop options:
- Rectangular. The most common option. Such a table can be placed near the wall, in the center of the room, in the corner of the room.
- Square. Looks great in a spacious kitchen.
- Oval. Due to the absence of corners, it is relevant for families with small children.
- Round. Suitable for the center of spacious rooms. Not always appropriate in a small room. The recommended minimum diameter is from 90 to 120 cm. The disadvantage is the inability to place the table against the wall.
But there are also extravagant options with three, five corners or an irregular geometric shape, but such a choice requires taking into account the number of people and combination with the interior.
To make it easier for people to sit while eating, manufacturers are increasingly replacing the traditional 4 legs with one wide one along the central axis of the tabletop.
The width of one middle seat is 70-80 cm.
Kinds
For a long time, tables were made in one shape, the shape of a rectangle. Long or short, they were located in the castles of the medieval nobility and in the huts of peasants, in the palaces of kings and in the painted chambers of boyars. Over time, tables of other configurations came into use, but they never went out of fashion or ended up on the list of unclaimed items. Dining tables and chairs are also relevant in modern interiors.
In a large family of dining tables, division by shape is traditionally accepted. No matter how sophisticated designers are, they cannot escape the laws of geometry, so we can choose between round, square, rectangular and oval tables.

The most popular type is a large rectangular dining table, which is chosen by adherents of conservatism. It is believed that a rectangle is optimal for accommodating numerous guests.
The most popular and versatile option: a table for 6 people. If the table is self-sufficiently decorated, it is better to prefer a runner to a regular tablecloth

A round dining table is also familiar to us, often occupying a central place in the living room or large kitchen. Obviously, such a model will not look good against the wall, and will not benefit the ergonomics of the room. A round table needs space commensurate with its size and a beautiful design, because being located in the center of the room, it inevitably attracts attention.

You can rarely see an oval dining table, although it looks stylish in appearance and brings a special zest to the interior. However, it’s the same story as with the round one: the oval needs to be allocated a place in the middle of the room so that it looks organic.

A square table is no less popular than a rectangular one, but there are some nuances with its placement in the interior. The square is less democratic than its rectangular counterpart, and requires competent softening of its equilaterality with other pieces of furniture.
If the size of the dining room allows, you can give preference to a solid-looking large square table
There are triangular-shaped options, but this comes from the realm of creativity, supported by a stylistic focus, or, in the case when we have a coffee-dining table in front of us. Often designers give such models asymmetrical outlines, abandoning the classic triangle, but they admit that it is very difficult to fit them into the interior.
Having dealt with forms, let's move on to functions. In the life of the dinner table there are everyday life, but there are also holidays. And here we should be concerned about the size of the object. However, manufacturers have long ago solved our problem and created a folding dining table that is universal.
A non-standard and very decorative solution would be a dining table made of stone, with processing that leaves a feeling of roughness
Color spectrum
There are 2 common color distribution schemes. The first is to use contrast, and the second is to create a subtle monochrome composition.
When using bright polar shades in kitchen design, the tone of the table should be contrasted with some component of the decor.
Most often this is:
- facade headset;
- apron;
- work zone;
- flooring/doors;
- curtains, paintings.
There is also one popular technique - using opposite shades. For example, white furniture - a black table, or a combination of dark brown colors with cream or soft beige. Here the combination is done according to the light-dark principle.
Chairs are selected in polar colors or identical ones. In a monochrome composition they can be darker or paler.
When designing a kitchen in one tone, for example, light, choose a table color similar to the main palette. In rare cases, it acts as an accent and is presented in an exclusive color. Then you can include some accessory of the same color into the interior.
The natural shade of natural wood can be combined with many design variations. It is inappropriate in a kitchen in the style of hi-tech, loft, minimalism. Here a glass table with metal legs will complement the design more harmoniously.
If the chosen color does not fit into the decor, this problem can be easily solved with the help of a tablecloth of the same shade.
Criterias of choice
When choosing a table for the kitchen, you want to take into account all the nuances: not to disturb the style of the room, take into account personal preferences, and improve the ergonomics of the space.
To simplify the selection, you need to answer yourself 3 questions:
- Where will it be installed? In the corner, in the middle of the room, near the wall. As a result, an understanding of the size and shape of the future center of the kitchen composition will appear.
- Number of family members and guests. For 2-3 people who rarely receive visitors, a small kitchen table is suitable.
Answers to the questions will bring clarity and help you navigate the appropriate model. To take into account all the pros and cons, pay attention to the following points:
- Table top material. Wood is considered a classic, but models made of glass, metal, stone or plastic are also popular.
- Functional purpose. The table will be used only for eating or food will be prepared on it.
- Size and shape. Without taking these indicators into account, it is impossible to choose a successful option.
- Matching the style. Even a very beautiful and original table may not fit into the interior of the kitchen if it does not match the style of the room itself.
If you want to save on material or design, you need to remember that a dining table is bought for 10 years. Local savings often create the prerequisites for a repeat purchase, due to rapid wear of the tabletop or inconvenient corners.
Variety of dining table shapes
The performance qualities of the table and its compliance with the given interior directly depend on the chosen shape. There are many different forms:
Rectangle is the most popular, comfortable, and roomy option of the proposed shapes.
- How to choose the right desk for standing work
How to choose furniture for a beauty salon
- Advantages of Italian furniture
Rectangular tables allow you to seat many people behind you. They take up relatively little space, especially compared to round tables. They can be easily placed in a corner or near a wall, which allows you to save occupied space and divide the room into imaginary zones.
Oval - has impressive dimensions, at least 90 cm wide and over 110 cm long. This is a beautiful dining table that is most often placed in large dining rooms or kitchens. It should not disrupt the processes of normal life, therefore it is very picky about its placement.
The circle fits elegantly and sophisticatedly into the interior of the kitchen, but is quite capricious regarding its placement. Like the oval one described earlier, it requires at least 80 cm of additional space to move.
A semi-oval is a rarity in kitchen interiors, but due to the absence of sharp corners, it becomes very valuable and practical in small spaces. The design of such tables implies the location of the straight side of the table near the wall.
Option for a small kitchen
In conditions of limited space, every centimeter matters. Here it is especially important to correctly calculate the area of the room, the number of regular diners and the frequency of visiting guests.
When choosing a kitchen table for a small kitchen, you immediately exclude heavy, bulky options. Having outlined the place where it will be installed, the shape of the tabletop is determined. There are different modifications available for a small room, but each has its own feature.
It is advisable to install a round table in the center; it takes up free space near the wall. For a family of 4-5 people, a square kitchen table is less than 8 square meters. m. will not work. This form is appropriate for a childless couple. The rectangular one is convenient because it can stand in a corner or near a wall, but it often takes up a lot of space.
The solution to such conditions seems to be the use of transformers. For example, a kitchen table-book, at which you can gather a company of 10-15 people, when folded, takes up a width of 20-25 cm. They can also be folded in half.
In a small kitchen it would be appropriate to use semicircular, triangular corner or sliding structures.
What to do with a small kitchen?
Considering the dimensions recommended above, you can only dine alone in a kitchenette in a Khrushchev-era building. But, as they say, in cramped conditions, don’t be offended. Therefore, our people seat six people at a table for 4 people. And in order to free up valuable square meters the rest of the time, transformers and folding mechanisms are used.
And in order to free up valuable square meters the rest of the time, transformers and folding mechanisms are used.
A transformer can surprise you first with its compactness, then with the number of guests that can fit behind it, since the tabletop increases by 2-3 times. Furniture stores offer different mechanisms: book, blind, automatic, rotary. A folding table is inexpensive, similar to a transformer, but it can be folded and stored in a closet until needed. There are also folding, wall-mounted, and collapsible types.

Important! The screws of folding models must be tightened periodically.
The retractable type is a salvation for small-sized ones. During non-dining hours, it is completely hidden in the niche of the set; if necessary, it becomes a large kitchen table, the level of which is a couple of centimeters below the working surface.

A high-quality table will last for decades without any complaints, as long as the design continues to please. First of all, evaluate your comfort - sit down at a table in a store. In all other requirements, manufacturers are ready to meet the buyer halfway.

Table design in the kitchen interior
Creating the most harmonious composition in the dining area is impossible without taking into account 3 basics:
- compatibility of all design components;
- proper separation of the working area and the eating space, otherwise there will be a feeling of incompleteness;
- compliance of the shape and material of the table with the general style of interior design.
Classic design does not go well with bright colors, but they are appropriate for modernity. And for Provence it is advisable to use a round table and beige shades. The visual perception of the kitchen interior is also influenced by the size, shape and material of the countertop. The color scheme complements the overall picture.
Furniture manufacturers offer a variety of kitchen tables in various shapes and colors. But it is advisable to choose this piece of furniture based on the characteristics and design of the room, and the number of residents.
