Which garage door to install: sectional or roller?

Many of our customers are faced with the question of choosing between sectional and roller garage doors. In this matter, everything depends on the location of the gate installation and the characteristics required of them. Let's look at them:

• Of course, the thermal insulation of sectional doors is much higher, since the thickness of the door leaf is 2-3 times greater. But if your garage is cold and you are not going to heat it, or the gate is installed indoors, then you should choose a roller shutter gate.
• No space on the garage ceiling
• Possible obstacles to installing sectional doors:
• Utilities run along the ceiling or a hoist hangs;

The depth of the garage is too small compared to the height of the opening;

• There is no lintel (the distance between the ceiling and the gate opening).

In such cases, installing rolling gates will be the way out.

Types of gates

All garage door roller shutters are characterized by the same design; the differences are in size, cost, materials from which the slats are made, method of installation and control, as well as the degree of protection.

As mentioned above, lamellas are available in steel or aluminum. Steel is characterized by high strength, reliability and long service life. In addition, the structures have soundproofing and anti-burglary characteristics, but their cost is high.

Aluminum products look presentable, the material is corrosion-resistant, lightweight, but quite durable. The structures are much cheaper than their steel counterparts.

If the device has an electric drive, operation is carried out using a key fob or control unit. Mechanical products are driven by a handle. It should be noted that if the gate weighs more than 30 kg, it is necessary to install an automatic system, because manually lifting such a structure will be very problematic.

According to the degree of protection, all roller shutter structures are divided into several types. Some of them:

1. Products marked P1 and P2 can be classified as classic designs with a low degree of protection. Their main property is to prevent dust from getting inside, as well as slight sound insulation.
2. Devices designated as classes P3 to P5 are average in terms of protection. They are often made from steel, which provides structural strength.
3. Devices with indicators P6-P8 are considered the most durable. These are usually bulletproof and armored products.

Another criterion for the classification of roller blinds is the methods of fixing the structures. They come in several types:

1. Overlays are installed on the internal or external wall of the room above the opening. The protective box is fixed there.
2. Built-in ones are placed inside the opening at the top. Experienced craftsmen believe that this is the best option for providing reliable protection against intrusion by strangers.
3. The combined method involves fastening the protective box in a special recess, which is located above the opening.

Gates are classified according to several bases

To size

In terms of size, roller doors installed on a garage belong to the small-sized category. Their width ranges from 3 to 8 meters. The structures for entering the site have a width of 5 meters. They are designed for the dimensions of the entering vehicle. The opening parameters are taken into account when choosing the height, as well as the thickness of the plates. If we are talking about openings with a small width, then slats with a thickness of 0.5-0.7 mm are installed. The profile height will be from 4.5 to 8 cm.

For large fence openings, lamellas from 0.7 to 1 mm thick are used. The profile height is selected in the range from 8 to 15 cm. The drums in the designs will also differ in size. The width and base material of the roller shutters affect the diameter of the shaft, which has a lower possible limit of 10 cm, and a maximum upper limit of 30 cm.

By material

The most popular materials for the manufacture of door leaves of this type are stainless steel and aluminum. Plastic is used less frequently due to its low degree of strength. Materials are selected based on the size of the opening.

• Cink Steel. Material used for large openings. Its main advantage is strength. Steel is resistant to physical influences and, with a protective coating, is not subject to corrosion.
• Aluminum. Lightweight material is used when equipping medium and small openings. Possesses anti-corrosion resistance. Aluminum gates come in a variety of colors and remain attractive for a long time.
• Plastic. Inexpensive, lightweight material used for structures that do not require burglary protection. Used for small openings. Requires careful use due to fragility.

The choice of material is made taking into account the purpose of the gate and its parameters.

By profile

Rolled structures can be single-sided or double-sided. The first option is used at facilities that do not require protection against burglary. Typically, a one-sided profile is used for zoning. It may have a perforated structure to provide air exchange and improve visibility.

The double-sided option helps to ensure reliable protection of the object. It guarantees excellent heat and sound insulation. During manufacturing, the double-sided profile is filled with polyurethane foam or any foamed polymer. The design can be blank or supplemented with embedded bicarbonate glass. The second option is installed to allow viewing of the surrounding area.

First of all, the garage owner must decide how to carry out the installation - overhead or built-in.

The fact is that the decision will affect what preparatory work is needed to mount the hole in the gate. In addition, it is worth taking into account the installation features that relate to the passage for the gate.

At this stage, the following requirements must be met:

1. The surrounding foundation should be as level as possible. There should be no cracks or protrusions.
2. The level of the mounting surface should be controlled, allowing a maximum error of 5 millimeters.
3. There must be a free area for the gate. If there are pipelines or other communications, they are removed if possible.

Control systems

Manual control

Gate drive Designed for gates with a door leaf weight of up to 35 kg. When the handle is rotated clockwise, the blade rises, and counterclockwise, it lowers.

Cord drive Can lift gates weighing up to 80 kg using a strong steel cable.

Spring mechanism The weight of the gate is compensated by springs, which makes it easy to open the gate using the handle both inside and outside.

Automatic control

To automate gates, push-button or radio-controlled electric drives are used. As an additional option, drives with an obstacle detection system are available, as well as a manual emergency lifting system in the event of a power failure.

Stages of setting up and adjusting the gate

To adjust the limit switches, you need to use a hexagon (plastic or metal), which is usually included with the finished gate. It is worth finding out the maximum and minimum position of the canvas (lower and upper). The lower is set thanks to the lower limit switch, the upper – thanks to the upper. The switches are located on the side of the box.

The upper position of the blade is adjusted so that one of the lamellas is in the opening of the guides, then electrical connections are made. Then we proceed to installing the front part of the box, securing it with rivets or self-tapping screws. The quality of the fastenings is carefully checked here.

Open and close the gate several times in a row to adjust how the track moves. After such a check, the installation is considered complete. All that remains is to remove the film from the lamellas and remove the dust.
