How to make a New Year's wreath with your own hands step by step

We make wreaths from pine cones with our own hands

For this version of the New Year's wreath, any cones from any tree will suit us. If you don’t have pine trees, then you can safely take others into account. This will not make the view worse, and it may even turn out better.

In this version we will make artificial Christmas tree branches from paper. If you don’t want to tinker for a long time, then you can easily get by with purchased ones.

We will need:

  • bumps
  • cardboard
  • baking paper (newspaper)
  • A4 paper
  • acrylic paint (green)
  • copper wire
  • Super glue
  • ribbon and beads for decoration

How to do:

1. Cut out a “donut” from cardboard of any size you like. To do this, draw circles on cardboard and cut it out.

2. Using adhesive tape, glue baking paper or old newspaper to the resulting frame.

3. The result is a blank like the one in the photo below.

4. Now we paint the A4 sheet green on both sides and let it dry.

5. After that, cut it into strips 3-4 cm wide and move on to the next step.

6. We need to make a fringe from the strips. To do this, we fold the painted strips in several layers and make frequent cuts, approximately 2/3 of the width.

7. Carefully open it so that the workpiece does not tear.

8. Next we need to take a piece of wire and fold it in half to make something like a hairpin.

9. We put it on the paper fringe and begin to wrap the wire in paper, gradually going down.

10. Let’s fluff it up a little and get a branch like this.

11. Having made several of these branches, you can collect larger branches by connecting them together.

12. Now we glue the cones with the resulting Christmas tree branches to the base of the wreath.

13. Decorate the finished wreath with beads and tie a ribbon.

That's all! Ready. As you can see, everything is quite easy and simple. And the end result was such a beautiful, festive wreath for the New Year and Christmas.

New Year's wreath made of tinsel - decorating the house for the New Year

Everyone wants to feel the approaching holiday in their home, especially something as bright and magical as Christmas. And without a doubt, you want to decorate your home in an original way, sharing your mood and fun with your guests. So that all your neighbors and guests can see that your New Year holidays are already beginning, make a beautiful New Year’s wreath on your door with your own hands from tinsel.

Of course, you can buy a wreath in a store, but it will give you as much pleasure as a DIY Christmas wreath. Most often they are made from natural material, but if you don’t have pine cones or spruce branches on hand, then a New Year’s wreath made of tinsel will look great.

  • Vine;
  • Laurel sprigs;
  • Rosemary sprigs;
  • Fabric tape.

Tools and auxiliary materials:

  • Wire cutters;

  • Colored wire.

We twist the base for a Christmas wreath made of wicker.

You can complement the decor with twigs with berries.

All that remains is to paint the wreath with a bow. It can be tied with ribbon. Bows made from ribbon with wire inside look original and retain their shape well.

We attach all the elements to the wreath and get this original Christmas or New Year’s decoration.

Fabric Christmas wreath

Fabric wreaths look original. Their undoubted advantage is the ability to use them for more than one year.

Making a fabric wreath is easy. Even if you wrap the base with strips of fabric of different colors, it will turn out beautiful. If you also add New Year’s decorations (they can be made of fabric or any other materials), you will get an original craft.

A wreath made from strips of fabric tied to a base looks no less original. Fast, simple and original!

An unusual braided wreath is made from three strips of fabric, sewn into a tube and stuffed with filling. Volumetric textile decorations on a wreath look beautiful - stars, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, hearts.

Symbolic Christmas wreath with candles

But if you adhere to Christmas traditions exactly, then you need to make a wreath with candles.

It is the candles that symbolize the approach of Christmas. There should be 4 large ones in total - according to the number of Sundays when they are lit, and 24 small ones. You can get acquainted with the traditions and history of Christmas wreaths in this material.

Definitely, a Christmas wreath and candles are a decoration for the festive table. But you can use it to decorate any flat surface, both indoors and outdoors. Let's start creating.

Traditional Advent wreath with candles

We will make a Christmas wreath with candles with our own hands on a base of fir branches. We will use 4 candles in total, which can be lit every Sunday on the eve of the holiday.

To make it you will need:

  • Coniferous branches: spruce, boxwood, fir;
  • Straw Circle;
  • Pine cones – 30 – 40 pcs.
  • Candles – 4 pcs.;
  • Decoration materials.

Tools and auxiliary materials:

  • Thin wire;
  • Scissors;
  • Glue gun.

We make the base of the wreath from ordinary straw, which can be replaced with foam plastic or other easily cut construction material.

We glue pine cones around the edge of the base.

It is necessary to glue both the outer and inner contours.

Fill the remaining surface of the base on one side with pine branches. You can combine several types of needles.

All that remains is to install 4 large candles on the finished Christmas wreath and decorate with available materials. Our version uses cinnamon sticks, bows, cookies, and stars.

Thanks to the decor, you can make wreaths in different colors.

Christmas composition from a wreath with candles

This composition can be used for the central decoration of a New Year's or Christmas table. A wreath of pine needles and snow-white candles will look noble and elegant.

To make it you will need:

  • Coniferous branches
  • Tray;
  • Large white candles – 3 pcs.;
  • Small white candles – 4 pcs.;
  • Semolina;
  • Artificial snow in an aerosol can;
  • Decorative white crystals.

The basis of the composition will be a small tray. It is on this that we place large candles. You can take candles of different heights - this will make the composition look more interesting, or add small candles.

On top of the tray we place a finished Christmas wreath decorated with artificial snow.

All that remains is to decorate the composition. In this case, we will use ready-made crystals or branches with snow cover.

We place them directly on top of the needles.

Finally, sprinkle the entire composition with semolina to create the illusion of real grains of snow.

And visual examples with photos will help to give you an idea, into which you can make your own unique adjustments. We have little time, the January calendar is rushing. So let's get to it, friends!

Beautiful Christmas wreath made of New Year's tinsel

Why do I start with a tinsel wreath? This is explained simply - in every home there are these New Year's decorations. They will help you make a wreath easily and quickly. It will look bright and beautiful.

What does the wreath consist of? From the base and decor. The lighter the design, the easier it is to make the base. What I mean is that you would understand: for the base you can successfully use the materials at hand - thin plastic hoses, wire, cardboard and even old newspapers, folding them into a thin rope and gluing them together.

Let's see how to make a Christmas wreath with your own hands step by step.

Preparing materials

  • Used hose – 1.2 m.
  • Tinsel – 3 m.
  • Satin ribbon – 2 m (preferably a color contrasting with the tinsel)
  • Small Christmas tree balls – pcs. 7
  • Cones - pcs. 5
  • A small piece of rope
  • Hot-melt gun (you can use glue).

Step by step creative process

  1. Let's prepare the base. The hose needs to be rolled in a circle and fixed in this position. This can be done using a larger diameter tube.
  2. We take tinsel and glue it to the base with a heat gun or glue.
  3. We wrap tinsel around the entire base. For strength, you can glue it in several places.
  4. We encircle the workpiece with a satin ribbon, maintaining a certain distance.
  5. Now we decorate the wreath with Christmas balls and pine cones. They just need to be glued.
  6. We take the three largest cones, tie them with a rope and hang them in the center of the product. Decorate with satin ribbon bows. The wreath will look more interesting if the length of the rope for each cone is different.
  7. We hang our beauty with a satin loop.

Now let's step back a little and admire the fruit of our labor. What a beauty! For some reason, it seems that the hanging cones will now begin to move like clockwork. And instead of the chimes they will announce the beginning of the New Year and the approach of Christmas. A fairy tale, and nothing more! Is not it?

New Year's wreath made of burlap

Necessary materials:

  • 2 rolls of burlap;
  • Wire base for a wreath;
  • Floral wire;
  • Additional decor.

Start by folding your burlap in half. Select one part of the wire wreath where the beginning will be. Pass the tip of the roll through the wreath. Pull it in a wavy pattern under each turn of wire. Leave a small loose end for tucking.

Now it’s time to move in the opposite direction using the same pattern, pulling the burlap under and over each turn of the base. Don't tighten too tightly. The matter should flow freely, forming soft waves.

Wrap the entire wire base in this manner, securing where necessary with hot glue.

Now you can hang bright elements, such as artificial berries and twigs, on the burlap wreath.

  2. Insulation for pipes. Select insulation of the required diameter and make a circle of the required size from it, and fasten the edges with paper tape.
  3. Newspapers. Twist the newspaper into a tight rope and form it into a circle for a wreath. Connect the edges with tape. Wrap the newspaper with toilet paper until all sides of the structure are equal in volume.

How to make a base for a wreath with your own hands

It doesn’t matter what material the wreath is made from, you cannot do without a base on which the decorative elements will be attached. You can buy it in a store or make it yourself in the desired size. Different materials are used to make the base:

  • Cardboard . This is one of the simplest and most popular options. A ring is cut out of cardboard using a ready-made or self-drawn stencil. It makes an excellent base. It can be covered with colored paper or, if necessary, given volume using newspaper or wrapping paper tied with rope or wire to a cardboard blank.
  • Newspapers . Newspapers are rolled into bundles, formed into a ring of the required size and wrapped in paper. If a wide base is needed, then newspapers are rolled into tubes and several layers are glued together until the desired size is obtained.
  • Aluminum baking dish or paper plate . Making a base for a wreath out of it is very simple: you just need to cut off the bottom to make a ring.

  • Plastic bottles . The bottom is cut off and fastened together with glue or tape, forming a ring.
  • Styrofoam . The base for the future wreath is cut out of packaging foam according to a template.

  • Insulation for pipes . They make a very practical and convenient base for a wreath. You can select the insulation of the desired diameter and roll it into a ring, securing the ends with tape.

  • Toilet paper rolls . They are connected to each other, forming a ring, and secured with tape.

  • Wire . A ring is formed from the wire and the ends are fastened.
  • Metal hanger . If you don't have thick wire in your house, a regular metal clothes hanger can replace it. Using pliers, separate it and form a circle of the desired size.
  • Twigs and vines . This is the traditional basis for a New Year's wreath. It may be a little more difficult to make than the others, but the result is amazing. The branches can be simply fastened with wire or tied with threads, or weaved into a base of willow twigs or vines. In any case, it will turn out original.

History, symbolism and meaning of the Advent wreath

In Western countries, residential buildings, cars, and offices are decorated with festive items. The item is popular due not only to its original appearance, but also to its meaning and history.

The wreath has a round shape, which from ancient times, long before the advent of Christianity, was associated among many peoples with the Sun. A few thousand years ago, similar products were created to celebrate the rebirth of the Sun. It took place in the second half of December (the days of the winter solstice), symbolizing the victory of good.

As a Christian symbol of Christmas, the wreath appeared in 1839, its founder was the Protestant theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern. According to one version, he had several children in his orphanage who, waiting for their favorite holiday, counted the days until Christmas. Trying to make the kids’ work easier, the Lutheran embellished the old wheel a little and placed nineteen small red candles inside, as well as four large white ones. A red candle was lit on weekdays and Saturdays, and a white one on Sundays. This way the children could clearly count the days on their own.

Another legend says that homeless children worked in a church parish located in Germany near the city of Hanover. To count the days worked from the beginning of the month, they took an unusable cart wheel and installed one candle in it every day, and on Sunday they added an additional, larger one. It so happened that at Christmas the children's room was decorated with a wheel in which twenty-eight light sources were installed.

Placing candles in the wreath makes it similar to the role of an advent calendar. Moreover, each Advent Sunday corresponds to a memory from the Gospel reading. Candles placed on a wreath symbolize light and goodness.

New Year's decoration has symbolism that is interpreted in different ways. The circle means infinity, the sun, life, and at the same time symbolizes God. Evergreen fir branches used in weaving correspond to eternal life. Candles are associated with the feeling of joy from the upcoming holiday, with the light that will illuminate everything at Christmas. Also, four candles correspond to all cardinal directions, and the circle corresponds to the globe.

The product can be decorated with bells. In Great Britain there is a belief that the ringing sound scares away evil spirits and gives praise to Jesus Christ. According to Scandinavian traditions, the sound of a bell signals the beginning of the fun. The material used in crafts is characterized by its attributes. For example, spruce among the Slavic peoples is a symbol of death, while the Celts compare it with eternal life.

Making a wreath for the New Year 2021 from beads

People who weave all kinds of bead products know that anything can be made from it. So the New Year's wreath is no exception. It will take a little time and skill, and in the end you will get a very beautiful product that can be hung anywhere. Let's try to do it.

We will need:

  • green beads
  • copper wire
  • aluminum wire (noodle)
  • ribbon
  • beads
  • glue gun

How to do:

1. First of all, we need to weave Christmas tree branches from beads. To do this, thread as many beads as possible onto the copper wire.

2. Count out the beads, approximately 12-15 pieces, and make a loop.

3. Twist the wire 3-4 turns.

4. We carry out steps 2 and 3 until we reach the required length.

5. Now we wrap the aluminum wire with green tape and glue the end with a glue gun.

6. We wind the “needles” of beads onto this wire in a circle.

7. Connect both ends of the wire, giving it a round shape. We wrap the joint with red tape and glue it.

8. We also form a bow from the red ribbon and glue it to the wreath.

9. Glue red beads to the finished product.

10. We thread golden beads into copper wire and wrap it around the wreath.

That's the whole process. Agree that it turned out very beautiful.

From fabric

To make the decorative wreath look impressive, it is recommended to use airy fabrics. Organza or nylon is best suited. The base can be made of plastic or wooden hoops or thick metal wire. The existing material needs to be cut into wide ribbons and, if desired, either tied into bows or made into voluminous flowers and secured to a frame. Also, for beauty, you can glue multi-colored shiny ribbons, beads, and rhinestones to them using hot glue.

If you have unnecessary woolen threads at home, you should try making small pompoms out of them, which will serve as a bright decoration for a wreath. As a base, you can take either wire or a wide cardboard frame, and glue the resulting pompoms onto it. Needlewomen who know how to crochet can knit into various small figures in the form of flowers, animals, stars, hearts and, just like pompoms, attach them to a base. You can also simply wrap the wide frame of a cardboard wreath with suitable threads and glue various decorations from ribbons, polymer clay, various beads, and figures cut out of paper onto it.

It's worth checking out old things. If you find enough unnecessary clothes, you can cut them into small ribbons and simply tie them in the form of bows to the base of the wreath. The brighter and more colorful the material, the more spectacular the wreath will be. In this case, it is better to take a store-bought multi-level base, which will make the decoration more voluminous. Bright knitted yarn is perfect for decorating a wreath . You can wrap it around a wide base and then sew voluminous fabric flowers on it, decorated with buttons and ribbons.

If you want, you can make a wreath out of buttons, this will require a lot of hot glue. You need to select buttons by color and glue them to the base.

New Year's wreath made from newspaper tubes

Weaving from newsprint has not lost its relevance for several years. From this simple material, needlewomen make not only small decorative items, but also entire chests! To make a wreath, cut newspapers into longitudinal strips 10 cm wide. Using a knitting needle, twist tight tubes, twisting the paper diagonally. Lubricate the end of the paper with PVA glue so that the workpiece does not unwind. The number of tubes depends on the desired wreath size.

Paint each tube with stain (if you want them to look like a vine) and let dry. If desired, instead of stain, use white acrylic paint, slightly diluted with water.

Next, fold several tubes together (the ends can be secured with tape) and braid. If you know other weaving techniques, go ahead! You can also take a wreath base and wrap it beautifully with tubes.

Assignment for parents

Organize a wreath-making evening with your children. Encourage creativity. Ask what interesting materials the kids would like to make decorations from. By the way, that very first wreath was made from an old wooden wheel. Perhaps your children will find a new and original use for wheels that have broken off from toy cars? What if you paint them with glitter and decorate them for your little sister's doll house?

Decide what color wreath you want to make and find unusual items to decorate it with. These can be small surprises from Kinder or soft toys, a beautiful pebble or chestnut, dried bright berries. You can paint the shaped macarons with gold or silver paint and decorate the wreath with them. Create! Make it up! Try it! (Not the pasta that I painted;).

New Year's paper wreath

But you can make a paper wreath with children, and they will not just sit side by side and hand over materials, but will actively participate in the process of creating this beauty!

Often the simplest ideas are the most beautiful, and our paper wreaths are proof of that!

For the fluffy decoration you will need:

  • eco-friendly cardboard bag for the base (can also be cut from cardboard)
  • Green, red, yellow paper
  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • beads
  • red acrylic thread
  • thin golden shower (for decoration)

Trust your child to cut the fringe on the paper, string the beads onto the string, and even glue the green layers of the wreath onto the base!

The picture shows step-by-step instructions for creating a decoration, follow it:

Anyone who loves minimalism in the interior may not decorate the wreath with a bright yellow bell. But with it he looks much more elegant and interesting! In addition, such a bell can be a separate idea for a craft with a child, if you make several of them and glue them on thick cardboard or on a greeting card for grandma.

See step-by-step instructions on how to glue a paper bell:

You can simply show your child how to attach the first petals to the base, and then he will independently fill the entire space of the decoration with them! Naturally, first teach how to use a stapler and give a lecture on safety precautions (but without intimidation and tediousness!).

Master class on making a burlap wreath

Making a stylish New Year's wreath from the most affordable materials is not at all difficult. All you need is wire and burlap. And you can decorate it with pine cones, beads, tinsel or paper flowers. The children will be happy to help you.

To make this craft you will need:

  1. technical burlap 1.5 meters long;
  2. aluminum or galvanized wire with a diameter of 2–3 mm;
  3. pine cones;
  4. thin tape;
  5. glue gun;
  6. kraft paper;
  7. New Year's decorations, beads.
  • 1. To make a wreath, you can use regular industrial burlap, which is sold in hardware stores. To make it a soft creamy color, pour bleach into it and leave it for several hours. After bleaching, the burlap will become softer and acquire a pleasant light shade.
  • 2. Cut the burlap into strips approximately 11 cm wide. Special precision is not required when cutting strips.
  • 3. If necessary, iron the ribbons and roll them into rolls. You should get about 10 skeins.
  • 4. Let's make the wreath frame. To do this, prepare 4 pieces of wire with lengths of 125 cm, 110 cm, 95 cm and 80 cm.
  • 5. From each piece of wire you need to make a circle. Using pliers, bend the ends of the wire and make hook loops.
  • 6. Form circles from the resulting blanks with your hands. If the wire is too thick, try straightening it with pliers. You should get 4 circles of different diameters.
  • 7. Connect the wire circles. Using tape, secure each piece, trying to leave approximately equal distances between the circles.
  • 8. Make transverse fastenings from adhesive tape on four sides. This will allow the frame to be securely fixed.
  • 9. Let's start filling the wreath with burlap. Take the first skein and attach the end of the ribbon to the inner ring. Using a piece of wire, secure it near the crossbar made of tape.
  • 10. Between the outer (largest) and inner (smallest) rings, three spaces have formed that need to be filled with tape. Carefully thread the burlap loops into these spaces. The first loop should be located in the lower opening, the second in the middle, and the third in the upper. Try to make loops of the same length.
  • 11. Having made three loops, twist the skein of burlap several times. Move the loops closer to the jumper and make three more loops. Press them into the first loops. Continue making loops until the ribbon runs out.
  • 12. Soon it will be necessary to continue weaving with ribbon from another skein. You can simply fix the end of the tape on the wire frame, as was done at the very beginning. You can also sew two pieces of ribbon together with a large needle using burlap thread. The seams will be completely invisible.
  • 13. Continue weaving until the next crossbar. Try to press the burlap loops tightly against each other to make the wreath fluffy.
  • 14. Once the wreath is completely woven, cut off the remaining burlap. Fix the edge of the tape on the back side of the frame.
  • 15. Carefully straighten the loops so that they completely cover the wire frame. Trim any excess threads that spoil the look.
  • 16. Let's start decorating the wreath. Small pine cones will look best. You can lightly bleach them in the same way as burlap.
  • 17. Let the glue gun warm up. Place the pine cones evenly in the folds of the burlap. Apply a drop of glue to the pine cone and press it against the wreath for a couple of seconds.
  • 18. The wreath can be decorated with a large New Year’s felt toy. Glue it to the bottom of the wreath.
  • 19. Wrap the item with shiny golden beads.

20. Paper flowers can become an original decoration for a wreath. Cut out a small circle from kraft paper. Cut it into a spiral.

  • 21. Start winding the ribbon from the outer edge, forming a rose. At the very end, apply a little glue at the bottom of the flower and fix it.
  • 22. Place the roses in the folds of the burlap and secure with glue.

Step-by-step instructions for making a felt wreath

Before, I had no idea that Christmas wreaths could be made from anything. I thought that it would be beautiful only if I used balls, cones and spruce branches. But once I saw felt wreaths, I was simply fascinated by them and I want to show some of them to you.

What we use:

  • felt of various colors;
  • beads;
  • ribbons;
  • plus everything your imagination suggests.

Basically, flowers and figures are made from felt, which are then attached to the base. But even the base itself can also be made from felt. This is how simple flowers are made.

1. Blanks are cut out of felt.

2. Then each petal is sewn together to create an indentation. The petals are sewn to the base of the flower.

3. A beautiful bead is sewn inside each flower.

4. Now we distribute the flowers beautifully over the base, glue them to it, and add leaves of green felt. Of course, don't forget about the loop. We get such a beautiful and easy-to-make wreath.

Or like this.

I hope that my master class helped you choose the option you like. Enjoy creativity! Get ready for the holiday with your children!

From other available means

Creative imagination is limitless, so it’s worth taking a closer look at various unnecessary things. If you wish, you can make a beautiful wreath from wooden clothespins - just fasten them in a circle and paint them in suitable colors.

You can also use unnecessary garland or old light bulbs, simply attach them to the base, after painting them in bright colors and showering them with sparkles. A wide base for a wreath can be covered with old wine corks and hot-melt glued to them with bright red beads. You can cut out various shapes from paper, these could be puzzle pieces, flowers, leaves.

To make an original decoration for your home, it is not at all necessary to have any special skills; it is enough to prepare a round base and select material for the wreath from what is at hand.

Coniferous branches

One of the attributes of the New Year and Christmas is the Christmas tree. Spruce and pine branches remain green when the sun rarely shines, and all other trees stand without leaves.

Coniferous branches can be used to decorate wire and cardboard frames. The cardboard base can be covered with paper in several layers for volume. Cut the branches into pieces, prepare glue and threads. Cones, bows, dried berries, and bells will complement the coniferous branches.

The layout can be done in two ways:

  • “Russed”: short branches are arranged chaotically. Glue them so that they puff up in different directions. Fill in the gaps and add other decorative elements.
  • “Smooth”: the ring is tied so that the branches are fixed on both sides along the inside of the ring. The branches will look in one direction, the wreath will be quite even and voluminous. Flexible long branches are suitable for this modification.

Threads or polymer glue act as fasteners.

Using the same technology, a wreath is made from branches of holly, fir or mistletoe, which also remain green all year round.

Natural materials

Materials suitable for making a holiday wreath include pine cones, acorns, nuts, dried citrus fruits, and berries. It is better to decorate with them a cardboard base wrapped in paper or fabric. The best way to secure natural materials is with glue.

Compositions can be diluted with green color by adding leaves or coniferous branches to the decor. But you can also create a composition in natural colors by adding twine and burlap to it.

Fabrics and threads

Burlap can be used to give a wreath a warm, rustic touch. For example, make a wreath from square scraps. Cut out squares of equal size, fold them and overlap them. The entire base is filled in this way. Add some greenery and tie a pretty bow.

For another variation, cut a long strip of canvas, fold it lengthwise and sew it together. Sew in the middle, gathering the fabric. This light airy wreath can be made without a frame or attached to a cardboard ring, decorated with bells, stars, berries, etc.

A wreath made of balls will look very original, reminiscent of warmth and home comfort. To make it, wind several light fluffy multi-colored balls of different sizes from yarn. Then secure the resulting balls on a cardboard base. Knit a small fabric from the same yarn, sew it into balls and stick a couple of knitting needles.

Tinsel and Christmas tree toys

Multi-colored tinsel is found in almost every home. It will also make a wonderful New Year's wreath. Here you can use a wire frame - just wrap it with tinsel and decorate it with rain. If desired, you can add cones, acorns, candies, and balls. When combining multi-colored garlands, you get a wreath that does not require additional decor.

Once upon a time, holiday wreaths were decorated with winter apples. Now other Christmas tree toys often use balls in this role. The method for making a wreath from New Year's toys is the same: attach the toys to the frame using glue, thread or wire.

Many are sure that with the advent of the new year, life must definitely change for the better. And as the proverb says, changes largely depend on how we celebrate this holiday. Festive decor creates a special atmosphere in the house and brings a New Year's mood. And we all begin to believe that miracles may be very close.
