Which cheap but good insulation to choose: rating of 8 effective materials

Why is it preferable to insulate a house from the outside?

If you insulate the house from the inside, it will become warmer, but then the walls will begin to collapse. This will happen due to the appearance of condensation formed at the dew point. The consequence of this is mold and mildew.

Destroys building envelopes and freezes if they are not insulated.

Concrete and brick walls accumulate temperature, then gradually return it. If you insulate the walls from the outside, the flow of cold air to them will be blocked, and they will warm up from the inside. As a result, ventilation through the window does not cool the house down, but only lowers the internal temperature by a few degrees.

Having decided to inexpensively insulate the inside of the house, you need to know that when the walls freeze, the room will quickly cool down even with short ventilation.

Cold bridges created by floor slabs are also a big problem. Most of the heat escapes through them. Insulating a house from the outside means neutralizing the influence of external influences, thereby extending its service life.

Before you decide to insulate the outside of your home inexpensively, you should know that such insulation does not always work. This happens when there is an air gap in the walls, i.e. the wall consists of two parts - internal and external facing.

Most often, this situation arises when a ready-made house is inexpensively insulated from the outside by using cladding. The gap remaining between the main wall and the cladding must be closed. When this is done, the main and decorative wall on the outside with a void between them works like a thermos.

If this was not done or the blockage became unusable over time, cold air will begin to penetrate into the gap. In this case, it will not be possible to insulate the structure inexpensively from the outside. The facing wall will not work as thermal insulation.

We will dwell in more detail on insulating a house with polystyrene foam. Find out how safe polystyrene foam is in our video:

Polyurethane foam

This option has excellent thermal insulation properties, which in many ways surpasses its competitors. Even a 20 mm layer of polyurethane foam can provide incredible results. The material is formed by combining several elements; during manufacturing it foams and greatly increases in size.

Polyurethane foam is environmentally friendly and completely harmless to humans or animals. It is also highly resistant to fire. When exposed to flame, it does not release any toxic substances.

This choice also has disadvantages that prevent its active use as insulation. Polyurethane foam has no vapor permeability. This factor is the main one when processing the walls of residential buildings. It will be necessary to install additional ventilation, which implies significant financial costs. Also, when using such insulation, it will not be possible to achieve a smooth surface, which will cause complications for applying decorative cladding. Another disadvantage is the inability to carry out the work independently. Such procedures will require special equipment and skills.

Ecowool

Many have not heard about this insulation option, but it has excellent performance. This material is made from cellulose fibers. The walls are treated by spraying. To do this, ecowool is mixed with glue in the equipment and supplied using a sprayer. You can apply a multi-layer coating, this will allow you to obtain the required layer thickness.

The advantages of using ecowool include:

  1. Ease and simplicity of the procedure.
  2. The material is environmentally friendly for humans.
  3. Excellent vapor permeability. But at the same time, ecowool must be protected from water ingress using a diffuse membrane.
  4. Fire protection. No smoke is generated during combustion and no harmful substances are released.

The disadvantages of ecowool include the impossibility of applying plaster or paint. Premature cladding with another material will be required. Processing will require the involvement of specialists with special equipment.

Based on the totality of all the advantages and characteristics, ecowool is the most suitable insulation option.
