Finishing a bathhouse from a log with your own hands - details about the process, review of suitable materials

A bathhouse made of a cylindrical log can decorate any area. With the development of progress, some technologies in construction have also changed significantly. This also applies to the construction of buildings. For example, a log cut into cylinders makes it possible not only to quickly but also quite easily build a steam room and other rooms in the bathhouse.

Rounded logs are a very good material that does not require additional processing. And even though this building material is much more expensive than its analogues, the savings in time and effort pays off many times over. By ordering a cylindrical log for the construction of a bathhouse, the buyer receives a material that is absolutely ready for use, which will not have to be further processed, impregnated with means to protect against fire and high humidity, and the logs will not have to be adjusted to size, since they are all exactly the same and very neat. Moreover, at a timber processing enterprise you can order exactly as many rounded logs as you need to build a bathhouse for a specific project. As a result, assembling the log house will not take much time, since everything will happen according to the principle of a designer, where each part fits well with the other.

Cylindrical timber is an excellent solution for all lovers of eco-houses who do not want to waste their time processing wood for construction. Nowadays, this material is the most popular compared to others.

Pros and cons of rounded logs

So, what is a fashionable and modern building material? A rounded log is nothing more than a perfectly round wooden beam with a longitudinal butt groove. Such cylindrical logs are made by turning and milling. The result is perfectly round workpieces. They are also called “pencils”.

Rounded log

The diameter of such “pencils” varies. The run-up is large: from 160 to 380 mm. Thin timber is used for the construction of bathhouses and houses in warm areas, while more massive timber is used in Siberian and northern conditions. Of course, it is also possible to make it to order, but the price is completely different.

It is best to build a bathhouse from rounded logs from Siberian pine, harvested in the northern regions. It has a harder structure and is resistant to sudden changes in temperature and humidity. High-quality wood has a ringing sound when struck with the butt of an ax. The ax should bounce off the log easily. The color of the wood should be uniform and light. There should be no blue spots. If they are present, the bathhouse will not last long.

Siberian pine is the best raw material for rounded logs. It grows long, smooth, has few knots and is easy to process.

Advantages of a bathhouse made of rounded logs:

  • Environmentally friendly and “living” material.
  • The walls “breathe” and create a natural microclimate inside.
  • Low heat loss: wooden walls retain heat perfectly (with proper and high-quality assembly).
  • Beautiful aesthetic appearance of the building.
  • Relatively simple and quick installation process.
  • External and internal finishing is not required.
  • Durability of the entire structure of the bathhouse (in the presence of high-quality raw materials).

Disadvantages when building a bathhouse from rounded logs:

  • It can be difficult to find a good and responsible team of carpenters. After all, installation must be carried out efficiently and professionally. A lot depends on this.
  • Wood cracking occurs. This happens due to poor quality raw materials. This issue should also be given special attention.

Advantages of a bathhouse with an attic

  • An attractive appearance that represents not a modest steam room, but a cozy house outside the city;
  • The attic does not increase the load on the structure and does not require an expensive foundation, like a full floor;
  • The attic retains heat better;
  • The attic floor does not require special heating due to the heat that comes from below from the steam room;
  • Saves space on the site and uses the area as efficiently as possible;
  • A rational combination of a summer house and a bathhouse for a small plot of 4-6 acres;
  • Suitable for narrow areas and difficult soil terrain.

Choosing a bathhouse project made from rounded logs

In any case, if you want to build a bathhouse from this particular material, you will have to contact a specialized company. After all, it is impossible to prepare such logs yourself. Companies selling rounded logs usually offer their design and installation services.

Construction of a bathhouse from rounded logs

Here it is important to decide what exactly you want to see on your site (size, general appearance, communications, and so on). You should choose the method of cutting the bathhouse. A bathhouse cut into a bowl looks beautiful, fashionable and practical. Of course, you can choose a more economical option (chopping with a paw), but the structure does not look so aesthetically pleasing, and the corners are not quite warm.

There are two ways to assemble a “pencil bath”. The first method is to install the log frame on site. That is, the bathhouse is built immediately on the customer’s site. All preparatory and installation work is carried out immediately on site. In this case, the team of carpenters requires high qualifications.

The second method is the constructor principle. The bathhouse is assembled on the company's premises. All elements are clearly customized and labeled. The structure is then disassembled and transported to the customer’s site. And here, observing the markings, the final installation of the log house is carried out. Such work requires less qualifications from the working personnel.

Wood for construction - choice

Practice shows that wood that will be used to build a bathhouse must necessarily have high-quality processing. Especially for this purpose, the material is additionally dried - this work is carried out in special chambers, and then in the fresh air.

This process takes time - at least three to four months. Further, the wood is treated with special compounds - against the effects of insects (and not only), to protect against fire.

Today, baths are most often built from the following materials:

  1. Untreated wood;
  2. Rounded timber;
  3. Profiled timber.

Every owner of a country plot dreams of such a design.

If the very first type of building material is used, it may not have the best effect on the quality of the future structure.

Popular solutions include:

  • Today, profiled timber (or rounded logs) is most often used. These materials have a characteristic shape. Profiled timber is characterized by rectilinear shapes, while rounded timber has convex surfaces.
  • The finishing of a bathhouse is usually carried out depending on what building material it was built from (in any case, this aspect is important). The surface of the profiled timber does not require additional leveling. However, this cannot be said about the surface of rounded logs.

Stages of construction of a bathhouse made of rounded logs

As usual, we start from the foundation. A tape type is best suited, since the intended bathhouse will have a decent weight. If the size of the building is small and the soil allows, then you can get by with a screw foundation. It is quite practical and promising.

After the foundation is ready, we “raise” the walls and roof. We install windows and doors. We lay ceilings and floors. We install electrical, plumbing and install the furnace. We deal with finishing and furniture.

Despite the fact that in words everything is so easy, quick and simple, a bathhouse made of rounded logs is a complex project. It will be quite difficult to implement it on your own. Anyone who does not have knowledge and practice in carpentry is generally a problem. So, the advice is to find a really good company and entrust it with the construction of your idea. For example, you can go here...

Interior decoration of the bath

With all the variety of bathhouse designs and the importance of high-quality construction and equipment, good interior decoration is a reliable guarantee of easy steam. And this is first of all! Therefore, it must not only be built correctly, but also its interior finishing must be done correctly. And we are not talking about decorations or adding polish, but about how to properly decorate a bathhouse so that it fulfills its function in full.

Walls made of rounded logs, carriages or timber, especially laminated timber, need only be sanded and varnished. A classic log house can be lined with wooden panels on the inside. A block house imitates a log, but takes away part of the useful volume, so lining is often used. The ceiling can also be made suspended using wooden lining. The use of internal finishing of walls and ceilings with panels will greatly facilitate the installation of utilities. Floors made from tongue-and-groove boards can be used both as a subfloor and as a finishing coating. If you install parquet (parquet board) or solid wood (engineered board), then the surface will have to be leveled using plywood.

The bathroom and toilet, in some cases the hallway and kitchen require laying ceramic tile flooring. Rigid fastening to the base of the floor is impossible: wood changes its linear dimensions, but tiles do not. Therefore, the “floating” floor technology is used, when the base for the tiles: plywood or gypsum board is not fixed to the ceiling and walls. A similar technology is used for tiling vertical planes - a false wall is mounted, which has a movable attachment to the main wall.

Selection of materials

Traditionally, the village log bathhouse, heated in black, was not finished at all. They laid the floor and ceiling, put up shelves, and drove pegs into the walls for hanging hangers, tubs and washcloths. At best, they trimmed the log walls. On the other hand, it was correct - nothing superfluous, but at the same time many useful things were missed.

Today, progress allows us to turn a dark, dull room into a pleasing center of hygiene and culture, a convenient and comfortable place to relax with family or friends. And a good mood is one of the components of a successful washing process. Yes, before we thought little about comfort; the main parameter was functionality. But people change, and today, in addition to functionality, modern man also needs comfort like air.

When choosing materials, it is reasonable to be guided by the following criteria:

  1. Frequency of use.
  2. Comfort level.
  3. Budget.

So, if a small bathhouse 3x5 m, consisting of a steam room, a dressing room and a soap station, is located at a country house, where a family of 2 people comes for weekends in the summer, then it is obvious that the load on the bathhouse will be very small. If, moreover, the family budget is limited, then it would be quite reasonable to choose modest but practical aspen lining for finishing the walls and ceiling. You can also order shelves from aspen for the steam room, and benches for the soap bar and dressing room. It is best to lay regular pine on the floor.

If you have a country cottage intended for year-round use, in which 5 or more people live, and friends and relatives come to visit almost every weekend, the load on the bathhouse, of course, is completely different. Both the size and number of premises will be increased accordingly. You will need a shower room and a bathroom, as well as a separate room for relaxation - a modern bathhouse cannot do without it. And if in the rest room, in principle, the same materials are used as in ordinary residential premises, then in the shower and bathroom it is better to finish the floor with ceramic tiles with appropriate waterproofing.

In the steam room you will have a choice between affordable aspen and more expensive linden or alder. Up to the aristocratic abash wood, which has very low thermal conductivity and therefore does not burn the body even at high temperatures.

Well, if you are one step away from becoming an oligarch, then the bath complex includes a Turkish hammam, a swimming pool, a billiard room, a bowling alley and a gym, and mosaics, marble, mahogany and embossed leather are used for decoration.

The best choice for flooring is larch and related wood species. Larch wood is not subject to rotting and tolerates moisture well.

" Important. Pine is usually not considered for finishing walls, ceilings and shelves in a steam room, since its knots release resin when heated, which can burn and stain if it gets on the skin.

Steam room finishing

The walls and ceiling in the steam room are finished with clapboard, chosen for the reasons described above. Between the lining and the walls, a layer of vapor and thermal insulation is usually laid: membrane material and mineral wool. This allows you to speed up the heating of the bath during the cold period and retain heat in it longer. In addition, vapor barrier protects the walls of the bathhouse from excess moisture.

Boards are laid on the floor, there are two options for laying them - either small gaps are left between them (a budget, traditional option), or the slope of the floor is carefully adjusted and a drain is installed in its lowest part to drain water.

Electrical wiring and pipes of heating, ventilation, water supply and sewerage systems should be installed before finishing work begins.

Soapbox

The traditional room for a peasant bathhouse, in which, in fact, the whole family washed and washed, is now increasingly being replaced by a shower and toilet, especially if the bathhouse has running water. But in any case, in a real bath there should be a place where you can jump out of the steam room and splash yourself with cold water.

If there is no running water in the bathhouse, then the soap bar is arranged in the traditional way, with a permeable wooden floor. Often the floor is made of panels that are raised for drying. Benches are attached to the walls, or they are made free-standing.

" Important. The soap room is a wet room and all fittings and fittings must be in accordance with the codes and requirements for such rooms.

Features of insulation and wall finishing

Jute rope

After you have placed the bathhouse under the roof, you should pay attention to the walls. No matter how smooth the timber is or how accurately the installation is carried out, cracks will appear in the logs over time. And so that the joints between them (logs) are minimal, it is necessary to caulk the walls. That is, caulk all the seams. The work is long and painstaking, but necessary. It is performed better if you use a wooden or rubber mallet, and take a piece of metal plate as a “chisel”, sharpening it a little at the end.

This “thankless” job will help to perfectly insulate the walls. They must be caulked on both sides at once. It is recommended to seal the seams inside and outside at the same time. You can’t leave any side “for later.” Otherwise, the structure will be distorted. Of course, this will not be significant, but it will still happen. This option is not entirely good.

What material should be used for these purposes? The best option is jute insulation. It is simple, practical, and quick to work with. You can use moss or flax tow, as our grandfathers did. But, in my opinion, moss is no longer a relevant topic. You won't find better quality jute insulation.

Since wood tends to dry out over time, after about 2 years you will have to re-caulk the walls. You shouldn’t be lazy, otherwise the bathhouse will lose its original warmth.

At its core, a bathhouse made of rounded logs requires virtually no finishing. It already looks beautiful, but... It will be better if the outside of the wood is treated with special antiseptics. For example, “senezh-aquadecor” will not only protect the wood, but also give the bathhouse the color shade you need.

There is no interior decoration of the bathhouse at all, since painting and varnishing is not allowed here. For a unique effect, many people use jute rope to finish corners and joints. Two birds with one stone are killed at once - insulation (the same caulking) and wall decoration. It looks very attractive.

Finally, I would like to note that a bathhouse made of rounded logs is a truly worthy choice. Modern, beautiful and cozy in a Russian way. It is quite possible that some photographs will help you organize your creation and learn something interesting and unexpected for yourself.
